Cleft nose correction in Dortmund: diagnostics, surgery and check-ups at the Westfalenklinik

A cleft nose correction begins with comprehensive diagnostics and then requires careful aftercare. At the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, examination, operation, the two to three nights afterwards and the check-up appointments take place under one roof, and a personal contact accompanies you from the first consultation to the final check-up. The clinic has been working at the same location in Rosemeyerstraße for 25 years.

From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and change there to the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. By car, the clinic is located directly on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park: via the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and Wittekindstraße you reach the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. This is why patients opt for surgical cleft nose correction

  • Improving speech and eating function by remedying the anatomical deficits
  • Wish for a more natural appearance
  • Improving breathing by restoring nasal function
  • Aesthetic correction for a symmetrical and harmonious face

What is a cleft nose?

A cleft nose is a congenital malformation caused by incomplete fusion of the nasal tissue during embryonic development. This malformation typically affects the columella, which does not close completely, resulting in a cleft that can affect both the external appearance and the internal structures of the nose. The cleft nose often occurs in connection with a cleft lip, jaw and palate, which increases the complexity of the malformation. In severe cases the cleft can extend into the bony structure of the nose and present both aesthetic and functional challenges.

What restrictions come with a cleft nose?

People with a cleft nose can suffer from a wide range of restrictions. In functional terms, breathing through the nose can be considerably impaired because the nasal passages are often narrowed or deformed. This can lead to chronic breathing difficulties, increased susceptibility to respiratory infections and sleep disturbances. Speech can also be affected by the altered resonance and airflow, which can lead to speech defects or unclear pronunciation. In addition, many of those affected have difficulty eating, especially in the first years of life, as the malformation makes swallowing and sucking harder. Alongside the physical impairments, the psychological component plays a major role, as the altered external appearance can often lead to social anxiety, low self-esteem and stigmatisation.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum®: Aims of a cleft nose correction

  • Improving the airways for better breathing and oxygen supply

  • Improving speech through anatomical correction of the nasal and palatal structure

  • Reducing the risk of infection through improved nasal function

  • Supporting normal eating and swallowing functions through anatomical adjustments

What treatment options are there for a cleft nose?

The treatment options for a cleft nose are varied, but surgical correction is at the centre. Depending on the severity of the malformation, it can be carried out in several phases. Treatment usually begins in childhood, often in the first months of life, in order to improve function early. However, further corrections may also be necessary in adolescence or adulthood to improve aesthetic and functional results. Alongside the surgical intervention, accompanying therapies such as speech therapy or breathing therapy may also be necessary to support speech development and improve respiratory function. In some cases, orthodontic treatment is also recommended to correct the position of the teeth and the bite.

What does a cleft nose correction involve at the Westfalenklinik?

Treatment of a cleft nose begins with comprehensive diagnostics, which are often multidisciplinary. A team of plastic surgeons, ear, nose and throat doctors, orthodontists and speech therapists works together to draw up an individual treatment plan. The surgical correction is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take several hours. The procedure includes reconstruction of the nasal tip, the columella and often also the surrounding structures, such as the upper jaw. Careful aftercare is essential after the operation. It not only monitors the healing process but also tests the function of the nose. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks after the operation, and it can take several months until the final result is visible.

This is how a cleft nose correction proceeds at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum®:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Diagnostics in Dortmund. We examine the nose comprehensively and draw up your individual treatment plan, often together with other specialties. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The correction is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take several hours; the nasal tip, the columella and often also surrounding structures are reconstructed.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

In the clinic. You usually stay as an inpatient for two to three nights.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After 2 to 3 weeks

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed after about 14 days; you are back out among people after two to three weeks.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks you refrain from wearing glasses; in aftercare the healing and function of the nose are checked.

  7. Step 7

    After several months

The result. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks; it can take several months until the final result is visible.

What does the result of cleft nose surgery depend on?

A specific result of cleft nose surgery cannot be promised in advance. It depends strongly on the individual case, including the severity of the malformation, the age of the patient, the number of procedures needed and the experience of the surgeon.

The aim is an improvement in respiratory function and an aesthetic correction. However, it is important to note that in some cases additional operations may be necessary to achieve the intended result, especially during the growth phase in children.

What restrictions and risks are there with cleft nose surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, cleft nose surgery involves risks and potential complications. These can include infections, secondary bleeding, unwanted scarring and, in rare cases, impairment of nasal function. In addition, there is a risk that the aesthetic result does not meet expectations, which can lead to psychological strain. Post-operative swelling and bruising are normal and usually subside within weeks, but can temporarily affect nasal breathing. In some cases asymmetric healing can occur, which requires a further correction. Close cooperation with the treating doctor and careful aftercare are therefore crucial in order to minimise complications and support the healing process.

What does a cleft nose correction cost in Dortmund?

A cleft nose correction is planned individually after the diagnostics. The costs depend on the severity of the malformation, the extent of the reconstruction and whether several procedures are needed. Following your consultation at the Westfalenklinik, you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, German health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may contribute; more on this in the questions below.

The Westfalenklinik's treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; no costs are added afterwards for overnight stays and meals, follow-up treatments or the anaesthetist. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for in a surgeon who is to reconstruct my cleft nose?

Choosing the right surgeon is crucial to the success of a cleft nose reconstruction. Patients should make sure that the surgeon has specialised training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, ideally with a focus on facial surgery and in particular the treatment of cleft lip, jaw and palate. Experience from a large number of procedures is an important indicator of the surgeon's qualification. An experienced surgeon will also be able to give a realistic assessment of the results to be expected and to explain the risks and the course of the operation comprehensively. Patients should also look for a trusting doctor–patient relationship, as this fosters trust and communication throughout the entire treatment process.

At the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® led by Dr. med. Michael Bromba, with decades of experience, you can rely on expertise and care in performing a cleft nose correction or cleft nose surgery. Arrange your no-obligation appointment for a personal consultation at the Westfalenklinik Dortmund.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication and the treatment takes place in our central clinic. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated well and effectively with accompanying medication. Slight swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible, but these have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we only perform a nasal tip correction, only straighten the nose or carry out a full nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik can tell you very precisely how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.
