Rhinoplasty in Dortmund: consultation, surgery and aftercare at Westfalenklinik

Your nose correction takes place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the final check-up; the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® is also based there. For this, the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery does not depend on external surgical centres or affiliated hospitals: you are advised and operated on in the building, spend the night after the procedure here and return for the follow-up appointments. A personal contact accompanies you through all appointments.

The clinic is located at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, right on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park. If you come by car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. By bus and train, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

Reasons for a nose correction

  • Wish for an aesthetic nose
  • Wish for a more attractive facial area
  • For health reasons, to be able to breathe freely again

The nose is the defining organ in our face. Every time we look in the mirror, its shape and size, but also asymmetries, misalignments or flaws, are immediately present. It is therefore not surprising that nose operations are among the most common procedures in aesthetic surgery.

Aesthetic or medical nose surgery at Westfalenklinik

Some say: the nose is a feature of character and, like no other element, stands for the individual who wears it. Yet despite its significant visual presence in our face, the majority of people want an inconspicuous nose. After all, people with an unusual nose profile are not infrequently reduced to their nose in visual perception. But it is not only aesthetic reasons that make nose correction one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Often the correction serves primarily medical purposes to improve the functionality of the nose, such as improving breathing.

Acting responsibly: not every nose is suitable for a nose correction

Whether reduction or enlargement, the team at Westfalenklinik Dortmund only takes responsibility for nose corrections that preserve or even improve the function of the nose. We ask for your understanding that we cannot take responsibility for patient wishes that would result in a deterioration of function or breathing.

Aims of a nose correction

  • A more harmonious overall picture of nose and face
  • Correcting flaws by straightening misalignments or crookedness, asymmetries or nasal humps
  • Improvement of nasal function and of breathing through the nose when there is a functional disorder

Different surgical methods for nose correction

In principle, the suitable technique for carrying out a nose correction depends on where on the nose the operation is to take place: is the procedure to be only on the inside or also on the outside (i.e. closed or open), are changes to the soft tissues necessary, or are adjustments to the bone even advisable? In addition, it must be considered whether there may be pathological findings regarding nasal function and whether these may impose limitations on the possibilities of shaping the nose.

Correcting humped and asymmetric noses

Very common in our part of the world are so-called long noses with a hump, which can be corrected by first removing the bony and cartilaginous bridge of the nose and then straightening it. Other noses are too wide or sit at an aesthetically less attractive angle to the lips. Still other noses are asymmetrical or crooked and require a different approach from your treating doctor.

As you can see: there are all kinds of things to consider that can have an effect on the individual possibilities of a nose correction.

Methods compared

Closed or open technique

Which technique is an option depends on the extent of the procedure. The drawings show schematically where the incisions are.

Diagram of the closed technique in profile: the incisions are inside the nose, above the nostril

Closed techniqueincisions only inside

Surgery is performed from the inside only. In the closed technique, all incisions are inside the nose; whether it is an option depends on the extent of the procedure.

Open techniquesmall incision at the columella

In addition to the incisions inside, there is a small incision at the columella. It allows better access; when it is needed also depends on the extent of the procedure.

Nose surgery under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia

A larger nose correction is usually carried out under general anaesthesia, smaller nose operations sometimes also under local anaesthesia (local numbing). After the operation, marked swelling of the nose as well as bruising are normal, which is why the healing phase varies greatly from person to person. Operated noses have, however, usually healed after 2 to 3 weeks. Regular cooling of the nose by the patient, carried out as instructed, supports healing.

Your schedule at Westfalenklinik

This is how your nose correction proceeds at Westfalenklinik, from the consultation until it has healed:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. We discuss your wishes, the anatomical conditions, the suitable surgical technique and all risks and side effects. Take your time to find the right concept; you can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation takes about 1 to 2 hours; a larger nose correction is performed under general anaesthesia. A plaster splint with an adhesive or acrylic dressing is applied immediately afterwards.

  3. Step 3

    First night

In the clinic. As a rule, you leave the clinic one day after the correction; in a few exceptional cases you stay a second night for observation. Swelling and bruising are normal; cooling as instructed supports healing.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint, do without nicotine, sunbathing and sport, and wash your hair with your head bent forward. By the time the cast is removed, swelling and haematomas have usually subsided.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Removing the stitches. The stitches are removed after about 14 days; you are back out among people after one to two weeks. Operated noses have usually healed after 2 to 3 weeks; in most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. Please refrain from wearing glasses for the first six weeks after the nose correction.

Nose and face as an overall picture: what matters in a nose correction

Every face is quite special, and so is every nose. Together, though, they form a distinctive overall picture that our patients have become used to over decades and that is unmistakably linked to them.

For the team at Westfalenklinik it is therefore very important that this ensemble of face and nose remains in harmony in the course of a nose correction. The decisive aim of a nose correction must therefore be that it also fits into the overall picture after the procedure and that the proportions are harmonious. For this reason, it is important with a nose correction that you entrust yourself to doctors with experience and routine in nasal surgery who also take your personal individuality into account when shaping your nose. So that there are no nasty surprises later.

We inform you about the risks and side effects of your individual nose surgery

Before a nose correction, besides taking into account the anatomical conditions and the surgical technique to be used, comprehensive, individual and complete information about all risks and side effects of a nose correction is also important. Weigh things up carefully and take your time to find the right concept. This way you avoid later dissatisfaction and possibly further corrections of your nose, whether necessary or wished for on your own initiative. We will be glad to help you work out all the essential elements of your nose correction together with you as part of our medical consultation. We look forward to welcoming you to Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

What does a nose correction cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

Just as individual as every nose is, the treatment itself in a nose correction is, of course, just as individual. And this is also what determines the later price of the treatment. In any case, we therefore recommend that you obtain information and advice about your desired treatment at our Westfalenklinik with no obligation. Our prices for a nose correction start at €3,500 for a correction of the nasal tip, are around €5,000 for a nose correction and can also be over €6,000 if, in addition to the aesthetic correction of the nose, a functional disorder is also to be remedied or follow-up treatment of a previous operation is to be carried out.

Westfalenklinik's treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT. Overnight stay and meals, follow-up treatments and the costs of the anaesthetist are not added afterwards. If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please speak to your private health insurance or Beihilfe about this. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance is unfortunately in principle not possible for treatment at Westfalenklinik.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can usually be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible; by the time the cast is removed, they have usually subsided again.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic again one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this question depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we only perform a nasal tip correction, merely straighten the nose or carry out a comprehensive nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik will tell you exactly how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.
