Nasal hump correction in Dortmund: outpatient or with one night at the Westfalenklinik

Whether you go home on the same day after the correction of your nasal hump or stay for one night is something we discuss with you at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund. Consultation, operation and check-up appointments take place in the same building, which does not depend on external surgical centres or affiliated hospitals for care after the procedure either. The clinic is subject to supervision under § 30 of the German Trade Regulation Act (Gewerbeordnung) by the Ordnungsamt and Gesundheitsamt Dortmund and the Regierungspräsidium Arnsberg; hygiene follows the requirements of the Robert Koch-Institut.

From the main station you can reach Rosemeyerstraße 2–4 with the U45 to Stadtgarten and then with the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. By car, the clinic is right on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park; after the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, you park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1. Arrange your consultation at the Westfalenklinik.

This is why our patients decide on a correction of their nasal hump

  • Improving the side profile by smoothing a pronounced nasal hump for a more harmonious face
  • Wish for a more aesthetically pleasing and more balanced nasal profile
  • Wish for a more symmetrical nose by reducing irregularities in the nasal bridge
  • Adapting the shape of the nose to personal ideas of beauty or cultural ideals of beauty

What is meant by the correction of a nasal hump?

The correction of a nasal hump refers to a surgical procedure that aims to smooth a pronounced or irregular hump on the nasal bridge. The nasal hump can strongly influence the profile of the nose and make the face as a whole appear unharmonious. The hump often arises from genetic predisposition, earlier injuries or developmental disorders of the nasal structure. The correction of the nasal hump, also known as rhinoplasty, can smooth the profile of the nose and contribute to a balanced, aesthetically pleasing overall appearance. This procedure is not only carried out for cosmetic reasons, but can also improve breathing if the hump causes functional problems.

What options are there for treating a nasal hump?

There are various treatment methods for correcting a nasal hump, depending on how pronounced the hump is and on the patient’s individual needs. Common procedures include classic surgical rhinoplasty and, for smaller humps, minimally invasive procedures. In surgery, a distinction is made between the open and the closed technique.

The drawings show schematically what changes in the profile: in surgery, the hump is removed; with the filler injection, the irregularities around it are evened out.

Classic surgical rhinoplasty

With this method, the nasal hump is smoothed by precisely removing bone and cartilage. The surgeon reshapes the nasal bridge to create a more harmonious profile.

Minimally invasive proceduresDermal fillers

For smaller humps, a correction can also be carried out without extensive surgery. Targeted injections of fillers can temporarily adjust the profile of the nose to conceal irregularities. However, this method does not offer a permanent solution.

Open or closed technique

The choice of surgical technique depends on the complexity of the procedure. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella to give the surgeon better access, whereas with the closed technique all incisions are placed inside the nose to avoid external incisions.

What is the procedure for correcting a nasal hump?

The process of correcting a nasal hump begins with a detailed consultation in which the surgeon discusses the patient’s exact wishes and expectations. A thorough examination of the nasal structure and an analysis of the facial profile help the surgeon to draw up an individual treatment plan. On the day of the procedure, which is usually performed under general anaesthesia, the surgeon will precisely remove the nasal hump, smooth the nasal bridge and, if necessary, stabilise the nasal structure. The procedure usually takes one to two hours, depending on complexity.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with a splint or a dressing to support healing and protect the new shape. In the first days after the operation, swelling and bruising can occur, but these subside after about a week. During this time, the patient should avoid physical exertion and keep the head elevated to promote the healing process.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum®: possible aims of correcting a nasal hump

  • Improving nasal breathing by correcting airway narrowing caused by the nasal hump

  • Reducing nasal obstruction by smoothing the nasal bridge for better airflow

  • Increasing nasal stability by balancing structural imbalances that cause the hump

  • Better air circulation by improving the nasal structure, with the aim of preventing problems of the paranasal sinuses

This is how the correction of your nasal hump proceeds at the Westfalenklinik

The times apply to most procedures; you will receive your own schedule in the consultation.

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. We discuss your wishes and expectations, examine the nasal structure and analyse your facial profile; your treatment plan emerges from this. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on the extent, takes one to two hours. Afterwards, a splint or dressing stabilises the new shape.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

Rest. The procedure is possible as an outpatient or with one night in the clinic. Keep your head elevated and avoid physical exertion; swelling and bruising usually subside after about a week.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks after the correction, you do not wear glasses.

  7. Step 7

What does the result of a nasal hump correction depend on?

The result of a nasal hump correction depends largely on the procedure being performed by an experienced and specialised surgeon. The aim of the correction is a more harmonious overall appearance of the face with a balanced profile. However, it is important that the patient has realistic expectations and understands that the final result is only fully visible after several months, once the swelling has completely subsided.

What restrictions come with correcting a nasal hump?

Temporary restrictions can occur after the correction of a nasal hump. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first days after the operation and can temporarily impair breathing. The nose will be sensitive in the first weeks, and it is important to protect it from knocks or pressure. During this time you should avoid physical exertion so as not to jeopardise the healing process. Most patients can resume light activities after about a week; however, it can take several weeks until the nose has healed completely and the final result becomes visible.

What side effects and risks are there with correcting a nasal hump?

As with any surgical procedure, correcting a nasal hump involves potential risks and side effects. The most common risks include infections, bleeding and unwanted scarring. In rare cases, asymmetry or an unsatisfactory aesthetic result can occur, which requires a follow-up correction. Temporary swelling and bruising are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, a change in skin sensitivity or breathing difficulties can occur, especially if the nasal bridge has been changed substantially. Careful aftercare and following the surgeon’s instructions can help to minimise these risks.

What does a nasal hump correction cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

The costs of a nasal hump correction depend on the procedure and the extent of the operation; more about the costs of a rhinoplasty on the Rhinoplasty in Dortmund page. After your consultation at the Westfalenklinik you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote.

The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT. Follow-up treatments, the costs of the anaesthetist and, if you stay overnight, accommodation and meals are not added afterwards. If you wish, you can take out follow-up cost insurance against the costs of possible follow-up procedures, which we offer at cost price. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for in a doctor who is to operate on my nasal hump?

Choosing the right surgeon is crucial to the success of a nasal hump correction. Make sure that the surgeon has extensive experience in nasal surgery and specialises in rhinoplasty. A qualified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery with a particular focus on nose corrections is a good choice. Check the doctor's certifications and ask about their experience with the procedure during the consultation. Open and trusting communication with the surgeon is also important to ensure that your individual wishes and expectations are taken into account. A good surgeon will explain the entire course of the operation, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare measures to you clearly, so that you can go into the treatment well informed and with confidence.

At the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, led by Dr. med. Michael Bromba, we carry out nasal hump corrections with decades of experience and with care. Arrange your no-obligation appointment for a personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication and the treatment takes place in our central clinic. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can usually be treated well with accompanying medication. Slight swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible, but they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we merely perform a nasal tip correction, only straighten the nose or carry out a full nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik can tell you how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.
