Chin correction in Dortmund: outpatient at the Westfalenklinik

Your chin correction takes place at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the final follow-up examination. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery does not depend on external surgical centres or affiliated clinics for this: you are advised and operated on in-house, the anaesthesia is provided by anaesthetists specialised in plastic and aesthetic surgery, and you come back to the same clinic for your follow-up appointments.

You will find the Westfalenklinik at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, right on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and continue with the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

Chin reduction or chin augmentation: what a chin correction is meant to achieve

The aim of a plastic-aesthetic chin correction is the inconspicuous reshaping of a chin that does not fit, indeed is perceived as bothersome, in relation to the rest of the face. Such a surgical measure is also referred to as a chin reduction or chin augmentation, depending on whether the chin is perceived as too large and imposing or as too small and inconspicuous.

Chin and nose: the role of the chin in the proportions of the face

The relationship between chin and nose plays a particularly important role here. Both parts of the face are crucial to our aesthetic perception, and the chin, with its prominent position, is very often the bothersome element, with further effects on the respective attractiveness of the mouth, nose or eyes. For the overall impression of whether we judge a face to be harmonious and attractive, our brain does not look at the individual features separately, but rather as a whole. In most cases, the respective parts of the face taken on their own are in fact extremely aesthetic. It is only when they are put together into a whole that our brain plays a trick on us and conveys a different impression. This is exactly when a chin correction at the Westfalenklinik can be an option for aiming at a more harmonious overall impression through an intervention in the facial proportions.

Who is a chin correction an option for?

Incidentally, a chin correction is a suitable method for all genders. That is precisely why it is increasingly being used for women as well. Not infrequently, a chin correction is also part of a treatment concept for gender reassignment. By a chin correction we mean both the correction of a large, protruding chin, possibly even with a pronounced double chin, and that of a chin perceived as too small. The latter is commonly also known as a “receding chin”.

The doctors at the Westfalenklinik can therefore respond to a wide range of different findings and develop an individually tailored solution with you.

Aims of a chin correction

  • More balanced proportions and an altered side profile of the face, above all in the relationship between nose and chin
  • Correction of bothersome asymmetries by reduction or build-up of the chin

The approach at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund for a protruding chin that is too large

By a protruding chin we mean a chin that is too large. In such a case, the foremost point of the lower jaw is too strongly developed and usually also dominant, because it projects relatively far out of the face. Because this point is bony, a chin correction can only be carried out by surgically altering the jawbone. With the help of special instruments, the bone is thus brought into the desired shape, length and prominence.

The procedure is usually outpatient, so you can leave the clinic again on the same day. As a rule, it is performed through the oral cavity; the incision is then inside the mouth. If there is also a double chin that is perceived as bothersome, a small liposuction can be carried out as part of the planned procedure to remove the excess fatty tissue.

How a chin that is too small, a receding chin, is treated at the Westfalenklinik

For a chin that looks too small, a so-called receding chin, your treating doctor takes a different approach. To contour the chin as desired, two techniques have become established today. The first technique is a kind of bone shift (“chin sliding”). Here the chin bone is first cut through and the resulting lower part of the bone is moved forward. The position created in this way is fixed with the help of special screws or wire.

In the second technique, with which it is possible to bring a receding chin significantly further forward, a chin implant is inserted. Such an implant can be obtained either from the body’s own tissue such as bone material or cartilage (the pelvic bone has often proved to be a suitable source for this). Or a silicone implant is chosen, which fits into the chin area like a cushion and is tailored to you in size and shape. Incidentally, in a chin correction of a chin that is too small, too, a surgical technique performed through the oral cavity is used in most cases. Here, too, the incision then lies inside the mouth.

Three approaches compared

How the chin is changed

Dotted: the incision inside the mouth, through which the operation is performed in most cases. Dashed: the new contour of the chin.

Protruding chinreduction

If the foremost point of the lower jaw is too strongly developed, the bone is brought into the desired shape, length and prominence with special instruments. With a bothersome double chin, a small liposuction can be added.

A chin implant brings a receding chin forward. It can be obtained from the body’s own tissue such as bone or cartilage, often from the pelvic bone; alternatively, a silicone implant is tailored in size and shape to the chin area.

  5. Step 5

    Until month 3

Rest. For three months you avoid sun, sunbeds, physical strain and sport.

Is a chin correction associated with risks?

Like any surgical procedure, a chin correction involves risks. The most common among them are intolerances to administered medication or impaired wound healing, e.g. due to inadequate oral hygiene after the procedure. The respective type of anaesthesia also brings risks, which can differ considerably depending on physical conditions. Our doctors at the Westfalenklinik therefore recommend a personal, no-obligation consultation first, in which all key aspects of a chin correction, the existing treatment options and any risks are discussed in detail.
