Correcting a saddle nose in Dortmund: surgery and care in our own clinic

Rebuilding a sunken nasal bridge is a demanding procedure; afterwards you usually stay in the clinic for one to two nights. At Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, surgery, care and aftercare are under one roof: the specialist clinic does not depend on external surgical centres, clinics run by visiting doctors or hospital departments, either for the procedure or for complete postoperative care and support. The night shift is covered by the clinic’s own state-qualified staff trained in emergency medicine; anaesthesia is in the hands of anaesthetists who specialise in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

You will find Westfalenklinik at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance, including for the check-up appointments after the operation. By bus and train, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. Arrange your consultation at Westfalenklinik.

This is why our patients choose to have their saddle nose corrected

  • Restoring the nasal structure for an aesthetically pleasing and harmonious appearance
  • Improving breathing function by remedying breathing problems and narrowed nasal passages
  • Relief of functional complaints such as chronic pain or a feeling of pressure in the nose
  • Wish for a more natural and symmetrical nose shape

What is meant by a saddle nose correction?

A saddle nose correction is a specialised surgical procedure to restore the natural shape and function of the nose. In a saddle nose, the bridge of the nose has sunk in, giving the profile of the nose a flattened or “saddle-shaped” appearance. This deformity can arise from various causes, including injuries, earlier operations, congenital malformations or diseases such as granulomatosis. The correction aims to reconstruct the nasal bridge, restore the balance of the facial features and improve nasal function, in particular breathing.

What restrictions come with a saddle nose correction?

After a saddle nose correction, temporary restrictions can occur. These include swelling, bruising and possibly mild pain or a feeling of pressure in the operated area. The nose can be sensitive in the first weeks after the operation, and it is important to avoid excessive pressure or knocks. In the first few days, breathing can be restricted by swelling or nasal dressings, but this eases as healing progresses. Patients should be aware that full recovery and the final result can take several months.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum®: possible aims of correcting a saddle nose

  • Restoring the nasal structure to improve the shape and stability of the nose

  • Improving breathing function by reconstructing the nasal bridge and widening the nasal passages

  • Correcting functional problems such as nasal congestion and restricted airflow

  • Reducing chronic complaints such as pain or a feeling of pressure by restoring the normal shape of the nose

What treatment options are there for a saddle nose?

Treating a saddle nose often requires a complex surgical reconstruction, which is tailored individually to the patient’s needs. A common method is the use of cartilage grafts, taken from the ear, the rib or the nasal septum, to rebuild the nasal bridge. In some cases, synthetic implants can also be used. The aim is to raise the nasal bridge, stabilise the shape and improve nasal function. These procedures are particularly demanding, because they must take into account both the aesthetic and the functional aspects of the nose.

How does the treatment for a saddle nose correction work?

The process begins with a detailed consultation in which the surgeon analyses the exact causes of the saddle nose and develops a suitable treatment strategy. On the day of the operation, which is usually performed under general anaesthesia, the surgeon carries out the planned corrections by placing the necessary grafts and reshaping the nasal structure. The procedure usually takes two to three hours. A phase of healing follows the operation, in which swelling and bruising can occur. Careful aftercare is decisive in supporting the healing process. In the first weeks, the patient must avoid physical exertion and attend regular check-up appointments.

What does the result of a saddle nose correction depend on?

The result of correcting a saddle nose depends largely on the right planning and the precision of the surgeon; it is important that the procedure is performed by an experienced specialist.

Restoring the nasal bridge is intended not only to harmonise the facial features but also to improve breathing function, which can contribute to a better quality of life overall.

What restrictions and risks are there with a saddle nose correction?

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and restrictions with a saddle nose correction too. The most common risks include infections, bleeding, scarring or the risk that the result does not meet expectations. There may also be insufficient stability of the nasal bridge, which in rare cases could make a further correction necessary. In addition, allergic reactions to the material used are possible, in particular with synthetic implants. Temporary swelling, bruising and a restricted feeling when breathing are normal in the first weeks and usually subside within six to eight weeks.

What does a saddle nose correction cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

A saddle nose correction is planned individually; the costs depend on the effort involved in the reconstruction, for example on whether cartilage is taken from the ear, rib or nasal septum or an implant is used. You can find more on the costs of a nose correction on the page Rhinoplasty in Dortmund. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote.

Treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT. No costs are added afterwards for accommodation and meals, implants, follow-up treatments or the anaesthetist. If you wish, you can take out follow-up cost insurance against the costs of possible follow-up procedures, which we offer at cost. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for in a doctor who is to operate on my saddle nose?

When choosing the right doctor for the correction of your saddle nose, you should pay particular attention to experience and specialisation. An experienced plastic surgeon with a particular specialisation in rhinoplasty in the ENT field is decisive for the success of the procedure. Pay attention to the doctor’s qualifications, in particular certifications and memberships of renowned professional societies, and ask about their experience with similar procedures in the consultation. The relationship of trust is just as important: a good surgeon takes time for a detailed consultation, answers all your questions and responds to your individual needs and concerns. Make sure that the surgeon sets realistic expectations and explains the entire process to you clearly, including risks and aftercare.

At Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, our team around Dr. med. Michael Bromba performs saddle nose corrections with decades of experience and with care. Arrange your no-obligation appointment for a personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication and the treatment takes place in our central clinic. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can usually be treated well with accompanying medication. Slight swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible, but they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we merely perform a nasal tip correction, only straighten the nose or carry out a full nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik can tell you how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.

What does a saddle nose correction cost in Dortmund?

The costs depend on the effort involved in the reconstruction. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote at final prices, which include accommodation, meals, implants, follow-up treatments and anaesthesia; financing is possible through our financing partner.
