Total nasal reconstruction in Dortmund: several operations, one fixed location

A total nasal reconstruction is usually carried out in several operations, and healing takes months. The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund accompanies you at one fixed location: the clinic has worked at the same site in Rosemeyerstraße for 25 years and depends neither on external surgical centres, private-practice hospitals nor hospital departments for the operations or for the complete care and support afterwards. A personal contact accompanies you from the first consultation to the final check-up.

By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building's parking deck directly in front of the entrance. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. You will find all routes under Directions.

Why patients choose a total nasal reconstruction

  • Restoring the appearance of the nose
  • Rebuilding the nose after cancer, an accident or bite injuries
  • Strain on self-esteem caused by the missing or damaged nose
  • Relief of severe emotional and physical suffering

What is a total nasal reconstruction?

A total nasal reconstruction is a highly complex surgical procedure in which the entire nasal structure is restored. This procedure becomes necessary when the nose has been severely damaged or completely lost through accidents, cancer, congenital malformations or severe infections. The aim of the reconstruction is to restore both the aesthetic appearance of the nose and its functional aspects, such as breathing and the sense of smell.

What restrictions come with a nasal region whose function is completely impaired?

A severely damaged or missing nose not only affects the outer appearance but also leads to considerable functional problems. Patients often suffer from breathing difficulties because the nasal passages are narrowed or completely blocked. This can reduce the oxygen supply and considerably diminish quality of life. The sense of smell can be lost or severely impaired. In addition, many of those affected struggle with psychological strain, as the absence of the nose can severely affect self-confidence and social interaction.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum®: Aims of a total nasal reconstruction

  • Improving breathing by restoring nasal function

  • Aesthetic correction for a harmonious face

  • A look that appears as natural as possible as part of the reconstruction

  • Correcting traumatic or birth defects with the aim of an inconspicuous nasal profile

What treatment options are there when a total nasal reconstruction is necessary?

Treatment of a completely destroyed nasal region usually requires a multi-stage surgical reconstruction. Tissue, skin and cartilage, either from the patient's own body or through special implants, are used to rebuild the nasal structure. The use of skin grafts, rib cartilage or special prostheses is often necessary to restore both the shape and the function of the nose. In some cases, a combination of plastic and reconstructive surgery is also used to achieve a result that is as natural and functional as possible.

How does a total nasal reconstruction proceed at the Westfalenklinik?

A total nasal reconstruction begins with detailed planning and diagnostics by an experienced team of doctors. The surgical procedure itself is usually multi-stage and performed under general anaesthesia. First, the necessary tissue is removed and transplanted to the nasal region. The new nasal structure is then shaped and further refined in several operations. The healing process can take several months and requires intensive aftercare to stabilise the tissue and support the function of the new nose. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor the course of healing and to detect possible complications early.

This is how a total nasal reconstruction proceeds at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum®, in several steps:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Diagnostics in Dortmund. We examine the nose thoroughly and plan the reconstruction with you step by step. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    First operation

Transferring tissue. Under general anaesthesia, the necessary tissue is removed and transplanted to the nasal region. After the procedure you usually stay two to three nights as an inpatient.

  3. Step 3

    Further operations

Shaping and refining. The new nasal structure is then shaped and further refined in several operations.

  4. Step 4

    After a procedure

Plaster splint. For the first one to two weeks you wear the plaster splint and do without nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you are back out among people after two to three weeks.

  5. Step 5

    Over the months

Healing and aftercare. Healing can take several months and requires intensive aftercare with regular check-ups.

What does the result of a total nasal reconstruction depend on?

A specific result of a total nasal reconstruction cannot be promised in advance. The aim is to restore both the aesthetic and the functional aspects of the nose and thereby improve quality of life. However, the result depends strongly on the patient's individual situation, the experience of the surgeon, the technique used and the aftercare. In some cases, additional corrections may be necessary to achieve the desired result.

What restrictions and risks are there with a total nasal reconstruction?

As with any major surgical procedure, a total nasal reconstruction also carries certain risks and potential complications. These can include infections, bleeding, scarring and, in rare cases, rejection of the transplanted tissue. Temporary restrictions such as swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal after the procedure and usually subside within a few weeks. In the long term, asymmetric results can occur that make a further surgical correction necessary. Close cooperation with the surgeon treating you during the aftercare phase is therefore crucial to the success of the treatment.

What does a total nasal reconstruction cost in Dortmund?

A total nasal reconstruction is planned individually for each patient, usually in several surgical steps. The costs depend on the extent, the material used and the number of procedures; after the diagnostics at Westfalenklinik you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. If the reconstruction is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, German health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may contribute; more on this in the questions below.

The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT. Overnight stay and meals, implants, follow-up treatments and the anaesthetist are not added afterwards. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for in a surgeon who is to perform a total nasal reconstruction?

Choosing the right surgeon is decisive for the success of a total nasal reconstruction. Patients should make sure that the surgeon has extensive experience in plastic and reconstructive facial surgery, in particular in nasal reconstruction. It is important that the surgeon has already performed similar procedures and is able to give a realistic assessment of the possible results. In addition, the surgeon should maintain trusting and open communication in order to discuss all of the patient’s questions and concerns in detail.

At the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® led by Dr. med. Michael Bromba, with decades of experience, you can rely on expertise and care in performing a total nasal reconstruction. Make your no-obligation appointment for a personal consultation at Westfalenklinik Dortmund.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication and the treatment takes place in our central clinic. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated well and effectively with accompanying medication. Slight swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible, but these have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we only perform a nasal tip correction, only straighten the nose or carry out a full nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik can tell you very precisely how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.
