Straightening of the nasal axis in Dortmund: planning, surgery and check-ups at the Westfalenklinik

For 25 years the Westfalenklinik has been working at the same location on Rosemeyerstraße in Dortmund. Here the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® straightens your nasal axis: general anaesthesia is provided by anaesthetists specialising in plastic and aesthetic surgery, and if you stay overnight for observation after the procedure, you are looked after by the clinic's own qualified night staff. For your check-up appointments, you come back to the same building.

Without a car, you reach the clinic from the main station by taking the U45 to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. By car, take the Dortmund-Hombruch exit on the B1/A40 and park on the parking deck of the building directly in front of the entrance; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1. More on this under Directions.

This is why patients decide to have their nasal axis straightened

  • Improving breathing by removing narrowings or blockages caused by a crooked nasal axis
  • Correcting aesthetic irregularities for a straighter and more symmetrical nasal profile
  • Relief of chronic complaints such as headaches or sinus infections that are influenced by the nasal axis
  • Wish for a nose that suits the proportions of the face better and looks more harmonious

What is meant by straightening the nasal axis?

Straightening the nasal axis refers to a surgical procedure that aims to correct a crooked or asymmetrical nose in order to improve both the aesthetic appearance and the function of the nose. A crooked nasal axis can arise for various reasons, for example from congenital malformations, injuries or growth disorders. These deviations can throw the face off balance and lead to functional problems such as breathing difficulties or sinus infections. Straightening the nasal axis aims to bring the nose into a straighter, more symmetrical position so that the appearance looks more harmonious and breathing is improved.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum®: aims of straightening the nasal axis

  • Improving respiratory function by correcting curvatures of the nasal septum that can obstruct the airflow

  • Reducing chronic complaints such as headaches or sinus problems caused by a crooked nasal axis

  • Increasing the stability of the nose by aligning the nasal structure, which can prevent long-term functional problems

  • Improved air circulation by straightening the nasal axis, which can lead to more efficient and more comfortable breathing

What treatment options are there for straightening the nasal axis?

There are various surgical techniques for straightening the nasal axis, which are adapted individually to the patient's needs. The most common methods include:

Septorhinoplasty

This technique combines the straightening of the nasal septum (septoplasty) with aesthetic adjustments to the external nasal structure (rhinoplasty). The aim is to improve both breathing and the aesthetic appearance of the nose.

Correction of nasal bone and cartilage

In some cases, it is necessary to realign or reshape the nasal bones and the cartilage in order to straighten the nasal axis. This can be done through targeted incisions and reshaping.

What is the procedure for straightening the nasal axis at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum®?

The process of straightening the nasal axis begins with a detailed consultation and planning. The surgeon carries out a detailed examination of the nasal structure and analyses the patient's facial features in order to determine the suitable method for the correction. Your wishes and expectations as a patient are also discussed carefully at this stage.

On the day of the operation, the procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The duration of the operation depends on the complexity of the procedure, but is usually two to three hours. The surgeon opens the nose using either an open or a closed technique, depending on what the procedure requires. During the operation, the nasal septum, the bones and the cartilage are realigned to create a straight and symmetrical nasal axis. In some cases it is necessary to use additional material such as cartilage grafts to stabilise the structure.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with a splint or a dressing to support healing and protect the new shape. The patient often stays in the clinic overnight for observation before being discharged home. Postoperative aftercare is crucial to the success of the operation and includes regular follow-up appointments to monitor the course of healing.

This is how the straightening of your nasal axis proceeds at the Westfalenklinik:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. We examine the nasal structure, analyse the facial features, discuss your wishes and determine the suitable method. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia, open or closed; the nasal septum, bone and cartilage are realigned. A splint or a dressing then protects the new shape.

  3. Step 3

    First night

In the clinic. You often stay overnight for observation; smaller procedures can also be carried out on an outpatient basis.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks after the procedure you refrain from wearing glasses and attend your check-up appointments.

What does the result of straightening the nasal axis depend on?

A specific result cannot be promised in advance. It depends on the initial situation, the experience and specialisation of the surgeon, the chosen technique and the course of healing. The aim is to improve both breathing and outward appearance. Straightening the nasal axis can make the face appear more harmonious; at the same time, nasal function is to be improved. The final result of the operation becomes apparent after a few months, once the swelling has completely subsided and the nasal structures have stabilised.

What restrictions come with straightening the nasal axis?

Temporary restrictions can occur after straightening the nasal axis. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are normal and usually subside within the first two weeks. In the first few days after the operation, swelling may impair nasal breathing, and there may be slight pain or a feeling of pressure. The nose will be sensitive in the first weeks, and it is important to protect it from knocks or pressure. Physical exertion should be avoided in the first weeks so as not to jeopardise the healing process. Complete healing can take several months until the final result becomes visible.

What side effects and risks are there with straightening the nasal axis?

As with any surgical procedure, straightening the nasal axis involves potential risks and side effects. The most common risks include infections, bleeding and scarring. In rare cases, unwanted aesthetic results can occur that require a follow-up correction. Complications in healing can also occur, such as persistent asymmetry or breathing difficulties. Temporary swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, long-term changes in skin sensitivity or problems with nasal function can occur. Careful aftercare and following the surgeon’s postoperative instructions are crucial to minimise these risks.

What does straightening the nasal axis cost in Dortmund?

The costs of straightening the nasal axis depend on the extent of the correction and on which techniques are combined, for example whether the nasal septum is straightened or cartilage is grafted in addition to the external nose. Following your consultation, we at the Westfalenklinik will prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you.

Our treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT: overnight stay and meals, follow-up treatments and the anaesthetist are not charged afterwards. If there is a functional disorder, such as obstructed nasal breathing, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may contribute part of the costs. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for in a doctor who is to straighten my nasal axis surgically and carefully?

Choosing the right surgeon is crucial to the success of straightening the nasal axis. Make sure the surgeon has extensive experience in nasal surgery and specialises in rhinoplasty, especially in the correction of nasal axes. A qualified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery or in ear, nose and throat medicine with a particular focus on nose corrections is a suitable choice. Check the doctor’s qualifications and, in the consultation, ask about his experience with the planned procedure. Open and trusting communication with the surgeon is also important to ensure that your individual wishes and expectations are taken into account. The surgeon should explain the entire course of the operation, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare measures to you in an understandable way, so that you can go into the treatment well informed and confident.

At the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® led by Dr. med. Michael Bromba, with decades of experience, you can rely on expertise and care in straightening the nasal axis. Arrange your no-obligation appointment for a personal consultation at the Westfalenklinik Dortmund.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by their German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication and the treatment takes place in our central clinic. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated well and effectively with accompanying medication. Slight swelling and haematomas under the eyes are possible, but these have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

Naturally, this depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether we only perform a nasal tip correction, only straighten the nose or carry out a full nose correction. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik can tell you very precisely how much time off work to expect in your case if healing goes well.

What does straightening the nasal axis cost in Dortmund?

That depends on the extent of the correction, for example on whether the nasal septum is straightened in addition to the external nose. After your consultation at the Westfalenklinik you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote at final prices; financing is possible through our financing partner.
