The FUT method is particularly suitable for women and for long hair
The FUT technique is, alongside the FUE method, the second of the methods and medical techniques recognised today in modern hair transplantation. FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation and refers in particular to the extraction of the follicular units at the back of the head. In this case, the donor hair is taken from the donor area as a single strip of skin about 1 to 1.5 cm in height (a “strip”). This procedure is also how the FUT technique got its alternative name – what is known as strip harvesting or the strip method. Because only a narrow area has to be shaved, it is an option particularly for women and for long hair.

Once the strip of skin, which can carry up to 3,000 follicular units (grafts), has been taken, it is divided into its individual hair follicles by specially trained hair transplant technicians under high-resolution stereo microscopes. The grafts obtained in this way are then prepared for reinsertion, cooled on plasma coders and kept moist at all times to prevent the hair root from dying. With this procedure, the exposed grafts are protected against external influences under strict control so that they retain their function after reimplantation as well. With this, the Westfalenklinik team also aims for a quick healing and growth phase of the transplanted hair. The FUT technique is a type of treatment that has been tried and tested for decades and is widespread worldwide; it is particularly suitable for large treatment areas, as it is designed to be gentle on the material and is intended to enable high take rates.

The site from which the strip of skin was taken is closed with a fine suture. The stitches can be removed about 14 days after the procedure by us or by your GP.
At Westfalenklinik, we use a special closure technique for this, what is known as trichophytic wound closure. With this technique, the hair can grow through the sutured area, so that the suture in the extraction area is usually covered by hair. This allows more freedom in choosing a hairstyle, whether long or short.
How hair transplantation using the FUT method works at Westfalenklinik
The recipient area of the previously bald and thinning areas is fitted, in a precise arrangement, with tiny openings about the size of a pore, known as slits, and thus prepared for the actual transplantation of the grafts obtained. Only then do our hair transplant technicians insert the follicular units one by one into the recipient area. The instruments needed for this are carefully chosen beforehand to suit the properties of the hair follicles.

This is how an FUT hair transplant proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from planning to the result:

Beforehand
Your treatment plan. Before the procedure, the treatment plan, including the marked future hairline, is discussed once more, one last time, with your treating doctor. You will be told the exact duration of treatment: individual FUT hair transplants at Westfalenklinik take between 3 and 6 hours.
Step 2
Day of surgery
The strip of skin. The procedure takes place under well-tolerated local anaesthesia. It begins with the extraction of the hair roots to be transplanted from the ring of hair using the strip technique.
Step 3
Preparation
Under the microscope. Under high-resolution stereo microscopes, our team of hair transplant technicians obtains the follicular units. Between extraction and transplantation, they are cooled on what are known as plasma coders and preserved in this way.
Step 4
Insertion
Into the bald areas. The recipient area is prepared for the grafts using the slit technique. Our hair transplant technicians carefully insert the follicular units into the bald areas. Particular importance is given to the natural direction of hair growth and the planned hairline. We then apply a dispersion developed at Westfalenklinik for hair transplants, which is intended to soothe the scalp and support healing.
Step 5
The first few days
The resting phase. After the procedure you once more receive the most important information and recommendations on how to behave during the first few days. Wash the freshly transplanted hair in the first few days only exactly as instructed by Westfalenklinik. Your hair is now in a resting phase.
Step 6
Weeks 2 to 4
Stitches and healing. The stitches can be removed about 14 days after the procedure by us or by your GP. The donor area usually heals in 2 to 3 weeks, and after 2 weeks you are back out among people. You avoid sport for 4 weeks.
Step 7
After about 12 months
The result. The result of your hair transplant can be assessed after about 12 months. The transplanted hair has then grown in and is already a few centimetres long.
What does an FUT hair transplant cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing
The cost of an FUT hair transplant depends on the extent of the procedure. With the same number of grafts, FUT is somewhat cheaper than FUE, which usually requires a larger, healthy and dense donor area and is more time-consuming. How many grafts are possible in your case is something we discuss in the consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

For aesthetic and medical reasons, the upper limit is about 3,000 grafts. For most patients, this corresponds to slightly fewer than 6,000 individual hairs. Does the back of the head have to be shaved for an FUT hair transplant?
Yes, but only a very narrow area at the back of the head for removing the strip of skin. Thanks to the suturing technique immediately after the treatment, the shaved area is then no longer visible. The scar is covered by the remaining hair.
Do scars form in the donor area?
An FUT hair transplant leaves a very narrow scar. It is closed in such a way that hair normally grows through the scar again (known as trichophytic closure). As a result, the scar is usually not very noticeable over time.
How long does the healing process take for an FUT in the donor area?
Usually 2 to 3 weeks. You support swift healing if you avoid direct sunlight as well as saunas and solariums during this time. You should also not do any sport for 4 weeks.
For how many treatments is the donor hair at the back of the head enough?
As a rule, 3 to 4 sessions are possible. Even then, there is usually only one scar, because the previous scar is usually removed as well in a follow-up procedure. It is covered by the remaining donor hair.
What does an FUT hair transplant cost in Dortmund?

Hier fühlt man sich von der Erstberatung bis zur Entlassung sehr gut aufgehoben. Den Ausschlag für die Wahl dieser Klinik gab der Hinweis der Ärztin, ob ich mir über die Größe der Narben bewusst wäre. Diese Tatsache benannte sie direkt und empfahl eine andere Methode, die bei mir ausreichen würde, obwohl die gewöhnliche Hautstraffung mittels Schnitt sicherlich lukrativer gewesen wäre. Das hat mich überzeugt. Auch der Aufenthalt in der Klinik wurde so angenehm wie möglich gestaltet und es wurde auf individuelle Wünsche eingegangen. Der Kaffee der Nachtschwester morgens um 5 war das I-Tüpfelchen. ☺️

Es war ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis. Von der Frau Doktor bis zu den Anästhesie bis zu pflege Personal. Sie sind sehr nett und sind immer für den Patenten da. Ich kann die Klinik sehr empfehlen.

Jeder wird freundlich empfangen und behandelt, egal aus welcher Arbeitsschicht. Dr Reifenrath sowie alle Angestellten arbeiten professionell und Patientenorientiert. Stationär wie am Empfang, kümmert man sich sehr höflich und liebevoll um den Patienten. Der Anästhesist, seine Helferinnen und OP Schwestern waren ebenso freundlich und haben versucht mir die Nervosität zu nehmen. Alles in allem bin ich mit meiner Wahl der Klinik sehr glücklich.

Absolute Empfehlung! Ich habe mich vor einigen Wochen für eine Brustvergrößerung & Straffung bei Herrn Dr. Reifenrath entschieden. Vom ersten Besuch in der Klinik, bis zur OP und dem weiteren Verlauf war ich schlichtweg begeistert. Ich habe bei Herrn Dr. Reifenrath eine Bauchdeckenstraffung mit Korrektur einer Rektusdiastase und einer Fettabsaugung durchführen lassen. Ich habe mich jederzeit gut beraten und behandelt gefühlt. Die Heilung verläuft genauso, wie es Dr. Reifenrath im Vorfeld beschrieben hat und ich war nach wenigen Tagen wieder erstaunlich fit. Die Schmerzen hielten sich in Grenzen, die Nachsorge ist sehr unproblematisch und das Ergebnis super. Das gesamte Personal, ob am Empfang, im OP, auf Station oder in den Behandlungsräumen war immer sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Ich habe mich rundum gut aufgehoben gefühlt. Vielen Dank!
