Partial correction, new shape or restoration

How long the operation takes and how long you stay at Westfalenklinik depends on how much of your nose is changed. The drawings show schematically which part of the nose changes.

Restorationshape and function

After a previous nose operation, in the case of a cleft nose, or after cancer, an accident or a bite injury, the shape and function of the nose are restored: in secondary nasal surgery, cleft nose correction and total nasal reconstruction. Cartilage from your own body may be needed for this, for example from the ear or rib; a total nasal reconstruction is usually carried out in several surgical steps.

How your nose surgery at Westfalenklinik works

Several months pass between the consultation and the final result. The times apply to most procedures at Deutsches Nasenzentrum®; after a restoration, much takes longer. You will receive your own schedule in the consultation.

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. It begins with a detailed consultation and planning: we examine your nose, look at it in relation to your facial features and decide together what is to be changed. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on its extent, takes approx. 1 to 3 hours, a restoration approx. 4 to 6 hours. Afterwards, a splint stabilises the nose.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

Rest. Smaller procedures are possible on an outpatient basis; you usually stay one or two nights in the clinic, after a reconstruction two to three. Swelling and bruising are normal; keep your head elevated.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint for the first one to two weeks. During this time, avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport, and wash your hair bending over.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed after approx. 14 days. You are usually back out among people after one to two weeks, after a restoration after two to three weeks. In most cases you are unable to work for approx. 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks after the operation, you should not wear glasses that press on the bridge of the nose.

  7. Step 7

    After a few months

The result. The swelling gradually goes down; the final result is only visible after several months.
