In general, in plastic and aesthetic surgery, the exchange of old implants for new ones is called an implant replacement. A breast implant exchange can be carried out for health reasons or for aesthetic reasons. An exchange of the implants for health reasons is mainly carried out in the case of capsular fibrosis. This is a shrinking of the capsule around the implant. If symptoms such as pain and a feeling of tension in the breast occur, accompanied by a deformation of the breast and a change in the shape of the implant, or a shifting or twisting of the implant, we speak of capsular fibrosis. Capsular fibrosis mainly occurs in the first 6 months after an operation and can affect either just one breast or both breasts.

By car, take the Dortmund-Hombruch exit on the B1, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

How the breast implant exchange works at the Westfalenklinik

The surgical breast implant exchange takes about two to three hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure as a whole is admittedly somewhat more time-consuming, because, unlike a first breast augmentation, the old implants together with the foreign-body capsule must first be removed. Often a change of pocket, i.e. of the position of the implant above or below the muscle, is also necessary. And in certain cases the skin also has to be tightened. In professional terms, however, the challenge for your treating doctor is comparable to the first implantation.

This is how a breast implant exchange proceeds at the Westfalenklinik, from consultation to getting back to everyday life:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

    The procedure. The operation takes place under general anaesthesia. First the old implants are removed, in the case of capsular fibrosis together with the capsule, then the new ones are inserted. Afterwards you usually stay one to two nights in the clinic.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

    Taking it easy. Arm mobility may be restricted; tension, bruising and slight pain, especially beneath the chest muscles, are possible. The symptoms can usually be relieved with medication.

  4. Step 4

    After about 2 weeks

    Back to everyday life. After about two weeks you are usually back out among people.

What does a breast implant exchange cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

The cost of replacing the implants depends on the extent, the number of breast implants to be replaced and a few other things. In general, the cost of a medically indicated operation is below the cost of a regular breast augmentation. After your consultation, we will draw up a no-obligation treatment quote for you. The Westfalenklinik’s treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; overnight stay and meals, implants, follow-up treatments and the cost of the anaesthetist are not added afterwards.

If you took out follow-up cost insurance at the time of the initial procedure, it covers the expenses in connection with a breast implant exchange in accordance with its terms, provided the exchange is medically indicated. The Westfalenklinik offers such insurance at cost price if you wish. Without this follow-up cost insurance, the cost of a breast implant exchange is usually not covered by German statutory health insurance funds, while for private patients this depends on the individual tariff. Does replacing my breast implants lead to new scars?

Not necessarily. If no skin tightening is required, the implants can usually be exchanged through the existing scar.

What accompanying symptoms do I need to expect with my breast implant exchange?

How long can the new implants stay in the body after an exchange?
