FUE single extraction hair transplant in Dortmund

With FUE single extraction, the hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area at the back of the head and transplanted into thinning or bald areas. No linear scar results, and a return to everyday life is usually possible after a few days. At Westfalenklinik in Dortmund we inform you about the method.

FUE hair transplant in Dortmund: consultation, procedure and aftercare in one place

Your FUE hair transplant takes place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the check-up appointment after about 12 months. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery performs FUE hair transplants under sterile surgical conditions; the procedure is outpatient. We do not need an external operating theatre for this, and your personal hair consultant remains your contact person from the first consultation to the check-up.

The clinic is at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 and very close to the Signal Iduna Park. If you come by car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, the U45 takes you to Stadtgarten, and from there the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

A hair transplant using FUE single extraction can change your appearance. The method aims at a natural-looking hair pattern and a quick return to everyday life, without a linear scar on the back of the head. As with any procedure, there are risks, which we explain to you in advance. Find out about the options at Westfalenklinik.

What is the FUE method?

The FUE technique is one of the two methods of modern hair transplantation used today. FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and refers to the particular technique of extracting the follicular units in the donor area. Unlike FUT, FUE is characterised by the fact that the hair follicles to be harvested are extracted individually with high-precision hollow instruments and usually transplanted again immediately after extraction.

Methods compared

FUE or FUT?

Both methods transplant your own hair follicles from the ring of hair. How they obtain the follicles determines the scar, the quantity and the duration.

The follicular units are extracted individually with fine hollow instruments, without a surgical incision, and reinserted promptly. The micro-scars at the extraction sites are usually covered even by very short hair, which is why FUE also largely allows short hairstyles without restriction.

A strip of skin about 1 to 1.5 cm high is removed from the back of the head and divided into individual grafts under stereo microscopes. The wound is sutured so that hair can grow through the narrow scar. Because many grafts can be harvested in one session, FUT is particularly suitable for large treatment areas.

Careful preparation of the follicular units individually harvested for the hair transplant

The individual extraction of the hair follicles (also called a “graft” in English) is repeated with precise and concentrated work hundreds to thousands of times as required. What is special is that with FUE there is no clear-cut separation between the extraction and reimplantation phases; instead, all hair follicles are reimplanted directly without detours. Because this process requires particular experience and routine, FUE hair transplants at Westfalenklinik are carried out exclusively by members of our team who have been separately trained in FUE. This is intended to compensate for the fact that the growth rates with this procedure tend to be somewhat lower than with FUT. With this measure, Westfalenklinik aims for a consistent quality standard in hair transplants regardless of the chosen FU concept and thus for the fastest possible healing and growth phase of the transplanted hair.

The FUE technique is a type of treatment that has been tried and tested for decades. It is used by preference particularly for treatments of smaller areas, receding hairlines and the remodelling of hairlines, but also for reconstructions of beard transplants, eyebrow thickening and chest hair reconstructions.

Hair transplants at Westfalenklinik rely entirely on precise manual work. The factors behind the success of our work are the many years of experience of our doctors in hair surgery and of our medical teams of hair transplant technicians, compliance with hygiene and material standards, and the use of modern medical technology. At Westfalenklinik, FUE hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating theatre conditions, and our medical and non-medical quality standards are regularly reviewed and certified; the quality management has been audited by TÜV Süd in accordance with DIN ISO 9001.

Characteristics of a hair transplant using the FUE method

  • The aim is a natural-looking head of hair
  • No more daily concealing or covering of thinning areas once the hair has taken; caring for hairpieces is then no longer necessary
  • Gentle extraction of the hair follicles at the back of the head entirely without a surgical incision and without a linear scar
  • The transplanted hair follicles usually continue to grow in the treated areas
  • Return to everyday life often after just a long weekend

Scars with the FUE technique at Westfalenklinik

Instead of a skin strip, with an FUE the hair follicles are extracted individually, so that no linear scar results. The tiny holes created during extraction usually heal without problems, but leave micro-scars in a number that corresponds to the number of grafts extracted. As a rule they are covered even by very short hair. FUE therefore allows even very short hairstyles largely without restriction and gives you more freedom in choosing your future hairstyle.

Extraction using the FUE technique can be carried out on both long and short hair. Shaving the recipient area is not absolutely necessary, but it can shorten the duration of the procedure considerably.

How an FUE hair transplant works at Westfalenklinik

The recipient area of the previously bald and thinning areas is fitted, in a precise arrangement, with tiny puncture channels about the size of a pore, known as slits. Unlike with FUT, the grafts could be reinserted immediately after extraction. The transplantation of each individual graft would thus be completed within a few minutes; an FUE consists, in essence, of hundreds to thousands of individual small hair transplants. At Westfalenklinik, however, every individually extracted hair follicle is prepared once more with careful manual work, in order to support a natural-looking direction of growth of the hair and good combability. The instruments needed for an FUE are carefully chosen to match the properties of the hair follicles and, during the treatment, are changed if necessary, depending on the position of the follicle currently being transplanted.

Your treatment process at Westfalenklinik: FUE technique

This is how an FUE hair transplant proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from planning to the result:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Your treatment plan. Before the procedure, the treatment plan, including the marked future hairline, is discussed once more, one last time, with your treating doctor. You will be told the exact duration of treatment: individual FUE hair transplants at Westfalenklinik take between 5 and 8 hours.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The extraction. The procedure takes place under well-tolerated local anaesthesia. It begins with the single extraction of the follicular units to be transplanted from the donor area, the ring of hair.

  3. Step 3

    Preparation

Prepared once more by hand. Immediately after harvesting, every hair follicle is carefully prepared once more by hand, in order to support a natural-looking direction of growth and combability. Between extraction and transplantation, the follicular units are cooled on what are known as plasma coders and preserved in this way.

  4. Step 4

    Insertion

Into the bald areas. The recipient area is prepared for the insertion of the grafts using the needle or slit technique. Our hair transplant technicians carefully insert the follicular units into the bald areas. Particular importance is given to the natural direction of growth and the planned hairline. We then apply a dispersion developed at Westfalenklinik for hair transplants, which is intended to soothe the scalp and support healing.

  5. Step 5

    The first few days

The resting phase. After the procedure you once more receive the most important information and recommendations on how to behave during the first few days. Wash the freshly transplanted hair in the first few days only exactly as instructed by Westfalenklinik. Your hair is now in a resting phase.

  6. Step 6

    Weeks 1 to 4

Back to everyday life. Many patients can go back to their daily business after 2 to 3 days, and you are back out among people after 1 to 2 weeks. You refrain from sport for at least 4 weeks.

  7. Step 7

    After about 12 months

The result. The result of your hair transplant can be assessed after about 12 months. The transplanted hair has then grown in and is already a few centimetres long.

What does an FUE hair transplant cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

The cost of an FUE hair transplant depends on the extent of the procedure. The FUE technique usually needs a considerably larger, healthy and dense donor area and is more time-consuming. For this reason, the costs of FUE procedures are somewhat higher than those of FUT procedures with the same number of grafts extracted. We discuss how many grafts are possible for you in the consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

Following this, we will prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you. The prices are final prices including statutory VAT; follow-up treatments are not charged retrospectively. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum graft limit per session?

In an FUE hair transplant we extract up to about 2,500 grafts (just under 5,000 individual hairs), so that the donor area does not thin out too much and the chances of a high take rate increase. The quantity that is possible varies from patient to patient and depends on factors such as the size of the back of the head, the hair density and the tendency to form scars. We will be happy to advise you in person at Westfalenklinik.

Does the back of the head have to be shaved for an FUE hair transplant?

Yes, this is necessary for treatment with the FUE method. If you have already had a very short haircut beforehand (a few millimetres at the back), the shaving is usually barely noticeable in the first 2 weeks.

Do scars form in the donor area?

With an FUE hair transplant no linear scar results. At each extraction site of a follicle (graft), however, a tiny wound forms, which heals quickly on its own and leaves what is known as a micro-scar. These micro-scars are usually covered by the surrounding hair.

How long does the healing process take with an FUE in the donor area?

With an FUE, the extraction sites usually heal quickly. After just 2 to 3 days you can usually go back to your daily business. You should refrain from sport for at least 4 weeks so that the result can develop undisturbed.

For how many treatments is the donor hair at the back of the head enough?

With an FUE hair transplant, 1 to 2 treatments are possible, and more in combination with previous FUT treatments. Even at the first treatment, neighbouring grafts scar to a tiny extent, which makes follow-up treatments more difficult. The number of micro-scars rises with every treatment. So that the donor area at the back of the head does not become visibly thin, a switch to FUT is usually the better choice if further treatment is needed.

What does an FUE hair transplant cost in Dortmund?

The costs depend on the extent of the procedure. Because FUE is more time-consuming, the costs are somewhat higher than for an FUT with the same number of grafts. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik you receive a no-obligation treatment quote at final prices. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
