Weight loss with medical expertise at Westfalenklinik

With our medical care, you have competent medical support at your side. Find out everything here about the possibilities of GLP-1 therapy, a modern treatment approach that can reduce weight by about 15% on average; how much you yourself lose depends on your starting point, how well you tolerate it and how you change your diet and exercise.

Our GLP-1 treatment concept can lead to weight loss without surgical procedures. This form of therapy is therefore recommended in particular for patients who want to lose up to 10 kg. Prerequisite: there are no medical reasons against it and the patient is willing to change their own eating and exercise habits for the long term.

The principle of GLP-1 therapy is based on natural regulatory mechanisms

GLP-1 therapy does without surgical procedures or operations for weight reduction. Instead, the treatment is based on supporting the body’s own regulatory mechanisms. This form of therapy uses natural metabolic processes and helps to bring back into balance biological factors that have so far made lasting weight loss difficult.

The treatment approach uses clinically tested mechanisms of action. It has been scientifically proven that certain forms of therapy can reduce the feeling of hunger and significantly prolong the feeling of fullness.

The therapy works with various approaches and also makes use of the GLP-1 mechanism. GLP-1 is an abbreviation for “glucagon-like peptide-1”. This form of treatment is based on the way the body’s own intestinal hormone GLP-1 works, which is produced and released by the body in the digestive tract when food is taken in, with the aim of effectively regulating the blood sugar level. In addition, this type of therapy can promote the production of natural insulin in the pancreas. Sugar can thus be used more efficiently and taken up by the body’s cells. This reduces the urge for sugary foods, and the craving for more food that arises in the brain is curbed. A medically supervised GLP-1 therapy can also noticeably ease food cravings in many cases.

GLP-1 therapy is based on supporting natural body functions

GLP-1 therapy acts on three essential levels for weight reduction:

Marked slowing of digestion

Increased feeling of fullness between meals

Influence on the brain centre responsible for sweet cravings

The aim is an improvement in blood sugar balance and a gradual reduction in body fat.

Whether and how quickly this can work for you as a patient cannot be predicted exactly in advance. However, the study results so far are encouraging and show that GLP-1 therapy can regulate the metabolism and have a positive effect on body weight. This can be an important basis for changing your lifestyle in the long term. Scientific studies have shown that this treatment approach led to measurable weight reductions in over 90% of the participating patients.

In addition to a detailed first consultation, in which we would like to get to know you as a person and your medical history and discuss your personal goals, a comprehensive briefing with a doctor from Westfalenklinik in Dortmund is an essential part of the treatment. We then develop together an individual therapy plan tailored to your needs.

What is special about GLP-1 therapy?

Unlike conventional treatment approaches, the mechanism of action of GLP-1 therapy is based on natural regulatory mechanisms and requires no surgical procedures. This is a modern approach in obesity medicine that is based on decades of scientific research. It can be a treatment option for patients who are not suitable for surgical measures or who do not want them. This treatment, too, has side effects and risks, which we explain to you in advance.

GLP-1 therapy is a holistic treatment approach

As with all other treatment options, the same applies to GLP-1 therapy: medical support alone cannot guarantee long-term success. Rather, it is an aid that can make it easier to reach your personal weight-loss goal. However, so that you can benefit from the weight loss you have achieved in the long term, it is important to use the duration of the therapy to change your eating and exercise habits sustainably.

That is why, as part of GLP-1 therapy, Westfalenklinik Dortmund offers a holistic treatment programme intended to help you make use of the therapeutic effect and consolidate what you have achieved.

The holistic approach of GLP-1 therapy

  • Personal care

What are the advantages of GLP-1 therapy?

In studies, GLP-1 therapy has proven effective for long-term weight loss. It can help patients lose an average of 10 to 15% of their body weight within a year by reducing the feeling of hunger and providing a longer-lasting feeling of fullness. How much you yourself lose depends on your starting situation, the dosage, how well you tolerate it and the changes you make to your diet and exercise. The treatment is based on the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which is produced in the gut and regulates the desire for food, so that patients can feel full without being constantly hungry.

The treatment approach acts specifically on the receptors in the brain that control appetite and can lower the body’s “set point”, i.e. the weight that the body tries to maintain at a biological level. In this way, weight reduction can be achieved in the long term and a healthier lifestyle developed.

A further advantage of GLP-1 therapy is that it gives you time to change your lifestyle. You feel less hungry and therefore have more control over your eating habits. This makes it possible to change your diet and exercise regularly in order to reduce your weight further. With this treatment approach, we can support you in reaching your goal while developing a healthier lifestyle.

GLP-1 therapy: your timeline at Westfalenklinik

This is how GLP-1 therapy proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the review after a few months:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

First consultation and briefing. In two stages, our patient advisers and a doctor advise you, on site, by video chat or by telephone. Before the start, we record your values with the 3D body scan.

  2. Step 2

    In the first month

The start. Getting to know each other and setting the treatment goals. Your doctor draws up the treatment plan with the appropriate dosage. The preparations are sent to your home, and the first self-injection takes place following instructions. In addition, you become familiar with the digital offering and the coaching.

  3. Step 3

    Months 2 to 3

Finding the dose. Regular self-administration, dealing with side effects. Gradual increase of the dose, first noticeable changes.

  4. Step 4

    Months 4 to 6

New habits. Developing new healthy habits, checking blood values. In this phase, the full medical effect is usually reached and the weight levels off.

  5. Step 5

    From the 7th month

Review and outlook. New biological balance; assessment and possible extension of the therapy. Consolidating new habits, considering follow-up therapies.

What treatment goals does GLP-1 therapy pursue?

We are convinced that, alongside the actual weight loss, being able to maintain the new weight in the long term is at least as important. That is why GLP-1 therapy at Westfalenklinik is designed holistically, with a wide range of further treatment and advice services. GLP-1 therapy is based on five essential pillars:

Restoring a new biological balance

GLP-1 therapy is intended to make it possible to restore a new biological balance. Our doctors at Westfalenklinik recommend a suitable active substance that aims to have a positive influence on the receptors in your brain responsible for regulating appetite. Put simply, this can mean that during the treatment your body aims for a new weight set point that is lower than your current weight. This can lead to sustainable weight loss.

Sustainable change in behaviour

A change in behaviour with the help of your personal support team at Westfalenklinik: our doctors and other specialists. So that you can maintain the effect of GLP-1 therapy in the long term, it is necessary for you to change your previous behaviour. We help you with this and give you new impetus.

Establishing routine and tracking progress

Establishing routine behaviour and regularly tracking your progress. It is important that you do not lose sight of your goal. It helps if you develop your own routine for documenting your progress. It is also important to be pleased about smaller interim goals. That is why, at the start of GLP-1 therapy, you receive from us 12-month access to our digital app. A smart body scale is connected to the app and helps you and our team at Westfalenklinik keep an eye on the course of your treatment at all times. This allows us to support you, analyse your progress and adjust your therapy accordingly.

Documentation of your treatment results

We do not measure the course of our therapy only by your new weight after losing weight. Even more important is the improvement of your health as a whole, and this includes your body composition. For this, we need to measure your current physiological condition before the start of GLP-1 therapy. Using modern technology, we carry out a 3D body scan and create a digital representation of you. With this support, we can follow over the course of the therapy how your body circumferences, your physiological body values, your balance and your posture change. After your GLP-1 therapy at Westfalenklinik has ended, we repeat the 3D body scan and can easily compare your body values.

Evaluating new options

Already in the first consultation, we gain an important impression of whether you are suitable for GLP-1 therapy, whether this approach is sufficient for your goals or whether it may need to be combined with other treatment options at Westfalenklinik. Because, of course, GLP-1 therapy can also be combined with other treatment methods, before, during or after another therapy. And sometimes it is even medically necessary to use GLP-1 therapy as a bridging approach before the actual therapy can begin.

GLP-1 therapy and botulinum toxin injections into the stomach: what you need to bear in mind

Time and again, patients ask our doctors at Westfalenklinik Dortmund whether botulinum toxin injections into the stomach are also offered. Above all abroad, where the approval standards for a high level of patient safety are far from matching those of Germany or the EU, there appear to be dubious offers for this. But in Germany, too, there are isolated providers who try to attract patients to botulinum toxin injections into the stomach with supposedly cheap and tempting offers.

It is important to know: there is no approved therapy for treating overweight or obesity with the nerve toxin botulinum toxin A. Rather, some practitioners have come up with the idea of applying the treatment concept for which botulinum toxin was actually developed, namely the targeted blocking of muscle stimuli, to the stomach as well, in the hope that this would reduce stomach activity and thus noticeably slow down the digestive process in the stomach. In aesthetic medicine, this principle is used with a muscle relaxant in wrinkle treatment.

The main problem, however, is this: the muscles in the stomach are much stronger than, for example, in the face. A considerably larger quantity of the nerve toxin botulinum toxin A is therefore needed to trigger any effect at all in the stomach after injection during a gastroscopy. We are talking about concentrations that can quickly reach 6 to 8 times what is used, for instance, in an average wrinkle treatment in the face. Injected in the wrong place in the stomach, this can lead to considerable complications, or, because the stomach is such a large organ, it has in fact no effect at all. The variance in the effect therefore ranges between dangerous and zero effect. Incidentally, science shows this too: the desired effect occurs far too rarely with botulinum toxin A.

In addition, the effect of botulinum toxin A is limited in time and lasts only approx. 3 months. Consider this: for every top-up to maintain the effect, you would have to undergo another gastroscopy every quarter, a procedure under sedation or general anaesthesia, and that for years. It is actually obvious that this effort and the associated risks, side effects and downtime are out of proportion.

Finally, viewed quite soberly, a look at the treatment costs compared with GLP-1 therapy is also enough. If the therapy is planned for 6 months and the two methods are compared, treatment with GLP-1 therapy costs only about half as much. With a 12-month GLP-1 therapy, the costs are even only approx. 25% compared with four gastroscopies with botulinum toxin A. This does not yet take into account that the application is much simpler and the time required for GLP-1 therapy is low. The team at Westfalenklinik Dortmund will be happy to give you objective advice on all the essential details. Get in touch with us and arrange a first consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How does GLP-1 therapy work?

GLP-1 therapy is based on the body’s regulatory mechanisms and on GLP-1, the body’s own hormone, which is normally released in the gut to create a feeling of fullness after a meal. The treatment slows down the digestive process and thus leads to longer-lasting fullness after a smaller amount of food. The appetite centres in the brain are influenced, which can reduce the desire for snacks and larger portions, so that fewer calories are taken in overall. GLP-1 therapy can influence the body’s “set point”, i.e. the biological weight that the body tries to aim for, through its targeted action on the receptors in the brain that control appetite. Overall, the treatment can lead to you feeling full more quickly, taking in fewer calories and thereby reducing weight.

Who can have GLP-1 therapy?

In principle, there is no strict lower BMI limit for GLP-1 therapy in healthy people. However, the treatment is particularly suitable for people with a BMI of 25 or higher and for people with weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes. The therapy is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, for people with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, or for people who are allergic to the active substances used or their ingredients. If you are not sure whether this therapy is suitable for you, you can have a first consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund in person, by video chat or by telephone. After a careful medical history and assessment of your health situation, our doctors will draw up an individual quote and a suitable treatment plan for you. Should GLP-1 therapy not be suitable for you, we will be glad to advise you on other options for weight reduction.

What are the possible side effects of GLP-1 therapy?

As with all medical treatments, undesirable side effects can occur. The most common side effects are: 1. Nausea: a common side effect, which can be mild or more pronounced and can occur particularly in the first weeks of treatment. 2. Vomiting: can also occur, especially at the start of the therapy. 3. Diarrhoea: another frequently reported side effect. 4. Constipation: can occur, particularly with irregular use. 5. Abdominal pain: some patients report abdominal pain or mild stomach cramps. 6. Reduced appetite: can contribute to faster weight reduction. 7. Dizziness: some people may experience dizziness or light-headedness. 8. Blood sugar fluctuations: in people with diabetes, the risk of low blood sugar can be increased, especially in combination with other blood-sugar-lowering medicines. 9. Gallstones: in rare cases there may be an increased risk of gallstones. 10. Pancreatitis: although rare, inflammation of the pancreas can occur. 11. Possible effects on the thyroid: current research is investigating possible effects on the thyroid; the evidence is being monitored continuously. Note: many of these side effects arise as follow-on effects. Vomiting or diarrhoea, for example, can lead to dehydration, which can show itself as headaches or tiredness. It is important to drink enough fluid during the therapy and to keep to regular, balanced meals. Please note that further risks and side effects not listed here may occur. Before GLP-1 therapy begins at Westfalenklinik, comprehensive consultation and briefing take place in two stages with our patient advisers and our doctors. If side effects occur, we are of course there for you: contact us by telephone, chat or e-mail, and we will advise you on how to proceed to relieve your symptoms or arrange a check-up appointment with your treating doctor. We will then review your dosage and adjust your treatment plan if necessary. In the event of acute side effects or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing or a very rapid heartbeat), we strongly advise you to seek medical help immediately from your GP practice or the nearest emergency department.

What if I have forgotten to take a dose of my medication once?

If you have accidentally forgotten to take a dose of your medication, you should take the dose as soon as possible, unless it is already time for your next dose. In this case, you should skip the forgotten dose and continue with the next dose as usual. It is important to take our active substances regularly so that they can work evenly. However, if you have forgotten a dose, you should not try to make up for the missed dose by taking a double dose to catch up. If you are unsure what the right approach is in your case, please contact your personal contact person at Westfalenklinik. We are glad to help.

How can I stop taking the active substance?

If you would like to end GLP-1 therapy, you should not do so abruptly, but reduce the dose gradually over a period of 4 to 5 weeks in consultation with your doctor. Stopping the treatment suddenly can lead to a rise in your blood sugar level, which can cause health complications. Your treating doctor at Westfalenklinik will recommend that you reduce the dosage gradually before you end the therapy completely. In this way, your body has time to adjust to the reduced dose, and sudden fluctuations in blood sugar level are avoided. It is also important to discuss with your doctor how you can adjust your diet and lifestyle in order to continue leading a healthy lifestyle and maintain your weight after you have completed the therapy.

Can I combine GLP-1 therapy with another treatment?

Yes, after medical review, before, during or after another therapy. The treatment can, for example, follow the removal of a gastric balloon or, before a bariatric procedure, help to reduce risks. We will discuss what makes sense in your case in the first consultation.

What does GLP-1 therapy cost in Dortmund?

The monthly costs for GLP-1 therapy at Westfalenklinik start at €399 and include the first consultation, the medical briefing, the ongoing support and access to our digital app with smart scales. After the examination, you will receive an individual quote and a treatment plan; financing is possible through our financing partner.
