Ear correction in Dortmund

The ears are among the most sensitive organs of the body, and they are as present for us as hardly any others. No wonder protruding ears are a difficult subject for many people, especially when they lead to stress. At the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, our doctors pin back protruding ears using the gentle thread method.

Ear correction in Dortmund: outpatient at the Westfalenklinik

Your ear correction takes place at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the final check-up. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has been working at the same location in Rosemeyerstraße for 25 years and does not rely on external surgical centres or private-bed clinics for your procedure: you are advised in-house, operated on as an outpatient and come back for the check-up appointments. A personal contact person accompanies you throughout.

The clinic is located directly on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; on the building’s parking deck you park directly in front of the entrance. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and continue with the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

Protruding ears are a burden from a very young age

Even in childhood, protruding ears cause considerable distress, which later gives rise to the wish for a surgical correction. A precise prior assessment by our doctors is particularly important here, as the different causes of the malposition must be taken into account and corrected during treatment. In most cases, the backward fold of the auricle is missing or insufficiently developed, so that the auricle protrudes far from the head. By shaping the ear cartilage, it can be altered precisely at the intended point and folded backwards.

The thread method: how ears are pinned back at the Westfalenklinik

The so-called “thread method” is frequently used here, in which the corrected position is held with precisely placed sutures. The incision required for this lies behind the ear.

The ear correction is usually carried out as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia in twilight sedation. After the operation, a dressing must be worn for 3 days. After that, a bandage at night is necessary for a further five weeks to prevent the ears from accidentally folding over in sleep and the threads from tearing.

Aims of an ear correction

  • A harmonious shape of the head in full profile, with ears that lie closer to the head
  • More freedom in wearing ponytail, braided or short hairstyles
  • Gentle method with a small incision behind the ear
  • Outpatient procedure, no stay in the clinic required
  • Return to everyday life usually after 4 to 5 days

Your schedule at Westfalenklinik

This is how an ear correction proceeds at the Westfalenklinik, from consultation to healing:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. In a personal consultation with no obligation, we discuss the key aspects of an ear correction, the treatment options and the risks. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

Outpatient procedure. The ear correction takes 60 to 120 minutes and is usually carried out under local anaesthesia in twilight sedation. The incision lies behind the ear; afterwards you go home the same day.

  3. Step 3

    The first 3 days

Dressing. After the operation, you wear a dressing for 3 days.

  4. Step 4

    After 4 to 5 days

Back among people. After 4 to 5 days, you are usually back out among people.

  5. Step 5

    Another 5 weeks

Bandage at night. After that, you wear a bandage at night for a further five weeks so that the ears do not accidentally fold over in your sleep and the threads do not tear.

Does pinning back the ears carry risks?

Like any surgical procedure, an ear correction carries risks. The most common among them are intolerance of administered medication or impaired wound healing, e.g. due to direct contact of the ear with water. The type of anaesthesia in each case also carries risks, which can vary considerably depending on physical conditions. Our doctors at the Westfalenklinik therefore recommend a personal consultation with no obligation first, in which all key aspects of an ear correction, the existing treatment options and any risks are discussed in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How does the procedure of a classic ear correction work?

The ear cartilage is exposed through a small incision behind the ear, near the groove between ear and skull bone. The bend is then shaped with special sutures, and the ear can subsequently be fixed closer to the head.

Who is an ear correction suitable for?

Ear correction, also known as otoplasty, can be used for anyone whose ears are too large or protrude noticeably. This can affect patients of all age groups, as both children and adults suffer from this phenomenon.

Do visible scars remain after an ear correction?

With the thread method, only a small incision remains behind the ear, which is therefore hidden from the front. How the scar heals also depends on your individual wound healing.
