Zone-Harmonic® facelift in Dortmund: consultation, surgery and aftercare at the Westfalenklinik

Your Zone-Harmonic® facelift takes place at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the final follow-up examination. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery does not depend on external surgery centres, affiliated clinics or hospital departments, either for the operation or for the care and support afterwards. You spend the nights after the procedure in the clinic, looked after at night by our own qualified staff trained in emergency medicine; the anaesthesia is provided by anaesthetists who specialise in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

The Westfalenklinik has been at the same location at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4 for 25 years, directly on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

When is a Zone-Harmonic® facelift an option?

Our face is the area that most clearly reflects our age, as it is constantly exposed to external influences. As a rule, the first signs of skin ageing can be treated with dermatological wrinkle treatments or fillers. However, when wrinkles become more pronounced and certain areas of skin lose their elasticity and sag, these measures are often no longer sufficient. At this point, a Zone-Harmonic® facelift can be one way of tightening the face and giving it a fresher appearance. The method is designed to tighten the skin in a targeted way and to remodel the tissue as gently as possible; the aim is a natural-looking result.

The Zone-Harmonic® facelift differs in its technique from a classic facelift. It can be an option for patients who want facial tightening and prefer an approach that is as gentle as possible. The Zone-Harmonic® facelift is also an operation with risks, which we will explain to you in the consultation.

Our aim is to achieve, together with you, a natural-looking appearance that suits your personality.

Have the Zone-Harmonic® technology explained to you in detail

Our doctors led by Dr. Reifenrath use modern techniques of aesthetic surgery. With a Zone-Harmonic® Facelift, we place particular emphasis on a gentle treatment and the quickest possible return to everyday life. Unlike classic facelifts, which require deeper incisions, the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift is performed with the help of ultrasound, i.e. harmonic vibrations. The tissue is tightened in a targeted way, and the incisions are kept as small as possible. If necessary, slack areas of skin are contoured using harmonic technologies in order to restore the natural contour. In this way, several zones of the face can be tightened in one treatment.

What sets the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift apart

  • Technique

Unlike a classic facelift, in which larger incisions are usually made, the Zone-Harmonic® technology works with ultrasound or other harmonic vibrations to tighten the tissue. The aim is to put as little strain on the tissue as possible.

  • Scars

The technique often requires fewer incisions. The scars are kept as small as possible and are often placed in the hairline or behind the ears; how they heal also depends on your wound healing.

  • Recovery

The technology uses vibrations and heat to tighten the skin. How long the healing phase lasts and how painful it is varies from person to person; pain can usually be treated with medication.

  • Haemostasis

The device seals severed blood vessels immediately. The aim is a lower risk of bleeding; however, infections, wound healing disorders and bleeding are possible with the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift too.

  • Individual treatment

The Zone-Harmonic® technology allows a precise treatment tailored to the individual zones. The skin is tightened evenly and in a targeted way; the aim is a natural-looking appearance without a “tightened” or artificial impression.

  • Different skin types

The technology can be used on a wide range of skin types, including in people with sensitive skin.

Zone by zone: how facial tightening with Zone-Harmonic® technology works

With the Zone-Harmonic® technology, different approaches to facial tightening are combined. Zone by zone, the procedure suited to the respective area is applied, graded according to its effectiveness there. All of this using the Harmonic® Ultracision device from Ethicon.

The forehead (Forehead Zone): Depending on the existing pattern of wrinkles, the tightening takes place in the skin layer (subcutaneously) or beneath the fascia (deep plane). Sometimes simply placing deep threads with the ONE-Stitch technique is enough to improve the temples and the outer eyebrows (not to be confused with the thread lift, in which the threads dissolve).

The temples (Temporal Zone): Here, a small incision at the hairline (or within the hair) can be enough to open up the expression of the eyes again.

The cheeks (Cheek Zone): They sink over the course of life and lead to a hollow-eyed, tired appearance. With a skin-SMAS and deep-plane midface lift, we bring them back to their position in the face, over the cheekbones. A combination with repositioning or transfer of your own fat is also possible.

The jawline (Jaw-Line Zone): It is intended to connect the angle of the jaw with the chin again without interruption by wrinkles and bunched tissue. For this, skin tightening is combined with SMAS tightening and a redistribution of the fatty tissue.

The neck (Neck Zone): It often shows signs of ageing clearly. For a harmonious tightening of the whole face, this region therefore needs particular attention. A deep-plane platysma tightening, followed by an adapted skin tightening (adaptive skin tensioning), possibly combined with liposuction under the chin and a doubling of the central platysma muscle, is intended to soften neck wrinkles over a long period.

Upper and lower eyelids, brows and tear trough (Eye Zone): An aged eye area is particularly noticeable to the observer; a tired and exhausted appearance often shows in this area. An upper eyelid lift and lower eyelid lift, combined with fat redistribution (rim release) and a deep-plane repositioning of the midface, complement the tightening of the face.

Treatment of individual zones or of the whole face

Depending on individual goals and starting point, individual areas of the face up to the entire face can be treated. This is done by applying the Zone-Harmonic® technology, which offers a combination of gentle skin tightening, connective tissue tightening and muscle tightening. The technology uses harmonic vibrations or ultrasound to stimulate skin and tissue in a targeted way; this is intended to soften wrinkles and gently tighten slack areas of skin. The cheeks, forehead, neck and chin area are treated precisely, either individually or as part of a comprehensive facelift.

The individual areas of the face are treated as gently as possible, and your natural appearance is meant to be preserved. Should additional liposuction in the chin or neck area be desired and medically indicated, it can also be included in the treatment plan.

The Zone-Harmonic® technology allows our doctors to adapt the intensity and type of treatment precisely to your wishes. Depending on the extent of the treatment, the procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or general anaesthesia. The scars are kept as small as possible and can often be placed in the natural hairline or behind the ears.

What technology is behind the Zone-Harmonic® facelift?

What is Ultracision (Harmonic Scalpel®)?

Ultracision, also known as the Harmonic Scalpel®, is a modern alternative to conventional metal scalpels and electrocautery devices, which seal tissue using heat. It is based on advanced ultrasound technology and makes it possible to cut skin and tissue with great precision while stopping bleeding immediately at the same time. This technique is used in both medical and cosmetic surgery and offers advantages, particularly in terms of precision and the reduction of bleeding.

How does Ultracision (Harmonic Scalpel®) work?

Ultrasound energy has long been known for its ability to work, cut and at the same time seal tissue. The Harmonic Scalpel uses this technology to allow fine and exact incisions. The vibrations of the scalpel blade (55,000 vibrations per second) are used to heat areas of skin and tissue to 50 to 100 °C. This leads to immediate sealing of severed blood vessels, so that bleeding is stopped quickly. The main advantage of this method compared with conventional electrocautery or cauterisation techniques is the very targeted and limited area of effect: the heat does not penetrate deep into the tissue, which is intended to reduce the risk of damage to neighbouring tissue.

Use in medicine and cosmetic surgery

Ultracision has proven itself in cosmetic surgery. The fine cutting and sealing effects of this technology are used, for example, in breast augmentations, breast lifts and tummy tucks. According to research findings, the Harmonic Scalpel can also offer advantages in the removal of implant capsules after capsular contracture, as the precision and the reduced risk of bleeding make the procedure easier.

In addition, Ultracision is also used in general surgery, gynaecology, urology and oral and maxillofacial surgery, where precise incisions and efficient haemostasis are necessary. This technology is particularly suitable for larger blood vessels or sensitive areas, such as in the chest or abdominal cavity, as it makes the procedure easier for the surgeon and improves the overview during the operation.

Frequently asked questions

How exactly does the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift work?

The Zone-Harmonic® Facelift uses ultrasound technology, i.e. harmonic vibrations, to tighten skin and tissue in a targeted way; the incisions are kept as small as possible. The method allows precise skin tightening and haemostasis at the same time. The aim is the gentlest possible healing process, but complications cannot be ruled out with it either.

Is the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift painful?

During the procedure you are anaesthetised, depending on the extent under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or general anaesthesia. Pain after the treatment can usually be treated with mild painkillers.

How soon after the Zone-Harmonic® Facelift can I return to work or social activities?

Most patients can resume normal activities after about 1 to 2 weeks. Redness or swelling may occur, which usually subsides.

How long do the results of a Zone-Harmonic® Facelift last?

As a rule, the results last several years, although the ageing process continues; how long the effect lasts also depends on your skin and your lifestyle. A refresher treatment may therefore be advisable after a few years.

Who is a suitable candidate for a Zone-Harmonic® Facelift?

A Zone-Harmonic® Facelift is mainly an option for patients who show mild to moderate signs of skin ageing, such as slight to moderate wrinkles or sagging skin. It can also be an option if you prefer a less invasive approach than with a classic facelift. A detailed medical consultation helps to determine whether this method is the right choice for you.

The costs vary depending on the intensity and extent of the procedure and at the Westfalenklinik generally start at approx. €10,000. These are final prices including overnight stay, meals, follow-up treatments and anaesthesia; during the consultation you receive a no-obligation cost estimate.
