Scalp micropigmentation as an alternative or addition to a hair transplant

Scalp micropigmentation with us in Dortmund is a new procedure in which tiny dots of colour are injected directly beneath the scalp. Completely biodegradable, this method lasts for many years and can be used in many ways. Alongside hair transplantation using the FUE and FUT techniques, Westfalenklinik thus offers a further treatment method that visually thickens the appearance of the hair without a surgical procedure.

How scalp micropigmentation works at Westfalenklinik

In scalp micropigmentation (SMP for short, also known as scalp pigmentation), colour pigments are introduced into the scalp using our special Visual Hair Densification technique (VHD for short, i.e. visual hair thickening). The procedure can basically be compared to permanent make-up, but places considerably higher demands on the professional and technical execution and on the visual and aesthetic result.

For precisely these reasons, SMP at Westfalenklinik is also medically supervised and provided within the clinic infrastructure of Westfalenklinik under special requirements for quality and hygiene. Further advantages of VHD technology are the treatment effect lasting many years, for visual hair thickening that needs as little upkeep as possible, and the immediate, natural-looking appearance of the hair without an incision.

Who is scalp micropigmentation an option for?

SMP does not treat the cause of hair loss, but regardless of its type it can help you to conceal it visually – so in addition to hereditary hair loss, also in diffuse, illness-related or circular hair loss (alopecia areata). It is a suitable method especially for patients in whom a hair transplant cannot be carried out for medical reasons or cannot lead to the desired result. For patients who simply do not want a surgical procedure, SMP gives us an alternative solution in our range, just as it does for patients who would like to optimise the result of their hair transplant further in a gentle way. The possibilities are varied and can be roughly divided into three areas of application:

Areas of application

Full baldness, thinning hair or scars

Three areas in which the pigmentation changes the appearance of the hair visually.

Full baldnessshort hair stubble

Thanks to the visually simulated stubble, the result of the treatment looks like a modern shave. The special arrangement of the pigments gives the head a realistic-looking 0.5 mm cut.

in most cases, for the effect of short hair stubble

Thinning hairvisually denser

SMP is a suitable treatment method for thinning, sparse or fine hair. The visibly bald areas of the head are pigmented precisely, so that the hair looks denser and fuller.

Shaving
not strictly necessary

Scarscolour-matched

Visible scar tissue can be visually matched to the rest of the scalp. This makes the whole scar area considerably less noticeable to the observer.

Scalp micropigmentation at Westfalenklinik: what we pay attention to

From many years of experience in hair surgery, we know how important individual results that suit your type are. After all, the hair on your head shapes the appearance of the face and of the whole person. That is why it is particularly important to us to aim for natural-looking and inconspicuous results. Hair transplants have been part of our range of treatments for over 20 years. We are members of international professional associations for hair surgery, and in exchange with colleagues in the USA and the United Kingdom we decided on the VHD method developed specifically for scalp micropigmentation.

At Westfalenklinik, we rely on individual consultations, a gentle technique developed in-house and selected materials that are used exclusively for SMP. We do not use conventional permanent make-up methods. With the VHD technique, special pigments and a treatment technique tried and tested many times, we aim for a true-to-life result that matches your wishes.

What advantages does scalp micropigmentation offer compared with a classic hair transplant?

SMP can be used in addition to a hair transplant or as the sole method. In most cases, it is a question of your individual hair situation and your personal expectations which of the two procedures is better suited to what you would like from the treatment.

In this way, SMP can also be used where a hair transplant is not an option, for example if the donor area of the ring of hair is not sufficient or is unsuitable in quality, or the hair loss is already very far advanced (full baldness). The pigmentation then imitates hair stubble of varying density and thickness in different shades of colour, so that the overall appearance looks considerably fuller.

The course of scalp micropigmentation at Westfalenklinik

This is how scalp micropigmentation proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the consultation to the refresh:

  1. Step 1

    Before the treatment

Individual consultation: Before every treatment, we carry out a personal type analysis and first determine the suitable pigment shade. We use only high-quality, sterile and certified colour pigments, which we choose together with you. Determining the start of the hair and the hairline: An important basis is a natural-looking start of the hair, because this area is noticed most clearly by the people around you. The recommended hairline is drawn on with a kohl pencil.

  2. Step 2

    One week before

Sun, peelings, toupee. Avoid strong sun and UV radiation for one week before the treatment and refrain from peelings or exfoliating treatments. Anyone who wears a toupee must take the hairpiece off permanently one week before the treatment.

  3. Step 3

    24 hours before

Nothing stimulating. Do without coffee, tea, caffeinated soft drinks and other stimulating substances for 24 hours before the treatment. Also avoid vasodilating agents and medicines such as alcohol or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), as well as seafood, spicy food and large amounts of raw meat.

  4. Step 4

    First treatment

Under sterile conditions. The treatment takes place under sterile conditions in our special treatment rooms. Shaving the existing hair is often necessary, and we do this on site. We then degrease the scalp with a special lotion and prepare you for the treatment. The treatment itself takes between one and three hours, depending on the size and density of the area.

  5. Step 5

    After the treatment

Letting it heal. Do not wash the pigmented area during the three days after the treatment. Do without alcohol, excessive UV radiation, sauna and swimming pool as well as dry cold for eight days so that the skin can heal undisturbed. Do not remove the skin crust that forms after the pigmentation yourself by rubbing or scratching.

  6. Step 6

    From the fourth day

Care. From day four, for around ten days you apply a special care product that we recommend to you.

  7. Step 7

    Further treatments

Three to four times. The treatment is repeated three to four times at intervals of one to two weeks.

  8. Step 8

    After 1 to 1.5 years

Check-up and refresh. Around one to one and a half years after the fourth treatment, we decide together at the follow-up appointment at Westfalenklinik whether a pigment refresh makes sense. We recommend further refreshes about every four to five years.

Frequently asked questions

Does the scalp have to be shaved before scalp micropigmentation?

In most cases, the scalp is shaved before the first treatment, at least in the area to be treated, so that the desired effect of short hair stubble can be achieved well. If scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is meant to conceal a scalp that shows through brightly, shaving the existing hair is not necessarily required. You receive an individual recommendation on shaving in your personal consultation at Westfalenklinik.

Is scalp micropigmentation painful?

SMP is generally considerably less painful than a tattoo and can usually be carried out without anaesthesia. By continuously cooling the scalp, the pigmentation is often only slightly noticeable. However, how pain is perceived varies quite a lot from person to person. If you are particularly sensitive to pain, we can anaesthetise the scalp locally on request.

How many sessions are required as part of scalp micropigmentation?

As a rule, four sessions take place at intervals of one to two weeks. After about 18 months, it is decided at a follow-up appointment whether a refresh (the so-called refresh) is needed. Beyond that, later refreshes can be expected at intervals of three to six years so that the pigmentation is maintained.

Is scalp micropigmentation a tattoo?

No. The VHD procedure is based on the permanent make-up technique, in which the pigment is not introduced into the deeper layers of the skin. This is also the reason for the limited durability of the pigmentation. Unlike a tattoo, the introduced pigments are broken down and metabolised by the body after some time.

What accompanying symptoms should I expect after scalp micropigmentation?

Slight redness may appear after the pigmentation, which usually subsides after a few days. Talk to us about the treatment method that is right for you and let us advise you comprehensively on the possibilities and limits of SMP.
