Hair transplant in Dortmund: consultation, procedure and aftercare in one place

Your hair transplant takes place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointment after 10 to 12 months. In the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating conditions, and the procedure is outpatient. Your personal hair consultant accompanies you from the first consultation to the final check-up.

You will find Westfalenklinik at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park. By car, take the Dortmund-Hombruch exit on the B1, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; parking is on the building’s car park deck. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. This also makes the check-up the day after the procedure easy to reach.

Find out how a hair transplant at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund can lead to fuller hair. Whether you suffer from hereditary hair loss, complete baldness, alopecia areata or missing eyelashes, beard or eyebrows, our doctors will advise you on whether and how a hair transplant is possible for you.

When does a hair transplant make sense?

  • for hereditary hair loss
  • for complete baldness
  • for alopecia areata
  • also for missing eyelashes, beard or eyebrows

In modern hair transplant medicine, the two procedures of the so-called FU techniques are used almost exclusively today. FU stands for Follicular Unit and expresses the greatest possible precision in obtaining and further processing (preparation) the hair follicles obtained from your own hair.

Hair transplant with FUT and FUE for bald patches and hair loss

This is because with both FUT and FUE techniques, modern medicine makes use of the insight of obtaining hair follicles from the donor area at the back of the head, which is little or not at all affected by hereditary hair loss, and redistributing them by reinserting them into the bald areas affected by hair loss (recipient area).

Both methods obtain the hair follicles from the donor area at the back of the head. They differ in how the follicles are taken.

The hair follicles are taken individually from the donor area using fine hollow instruments and usually transplanted shortly afterwards; at Westfalenklinik, each follicle is prepared once more by hand before it is inserted. FUE is used in particular for smaller areas, receding temples and shaping the hairline, as well as for beard, eyebrows and chest hair.

The donor hair is taken as a strip of skin about 1 to 1.5 cm high at the back of the head, and trained hair transplant technicians divide it into individual grafts under stereo microscopes. Because only a narrow area has to be shaved, FUT is particularly suitable for women and for long hair. It is used in particular for large treatment areas.

Gentle hair transplant techniques at Westfalenklinik

Unlike earlier methods, the special feature of the FU techniques lies in being able to take the hair in its natural size, the so-called follicular units or hair follicles. For, contrary to common belief, hair does not grow individually from a hair root, but in small groups of 1 to 4 hairs. The aim of this measure is, on the one hand, to achieve the highest possible level of detail and an appearance that is as natural as possible. On the other hand, the hair is to be transplanted to the new areas as gently and undamaged as possible in favour of a high take-up rate.

Aims of a hair transplant

  • Denser and fuller hair
  • Transplanted hair from the donor area that is little affected by hereditary hair loss
  • Modern methods for a hair appearance that looks as natural as possible

You would like a hair transplant and are convinced that the FUE and FUT hair transplant techniques are the right decision for you? Then request information from us now and arrange a no-obligation appointment for a first consultation at Westfalenklinik.

These are the techniques we use to carry out your hair transplant

With very fine scalpels or needles, the surgeon makes tiny puncture channels (so-called “slits”) in the scalp, which determine the later direction of hair growth. The blade or needle width – between 0.5 and 1.0 mm – is matched in each case to the width of the patient’s individual hair grafts. The depth of the punctures – between 3 and 6 mm – is adjusted to the respective length of the hair root. Because the puncture channel is exactly as large as the corresponding hair graft, the wound is as small as possible and therefore so is the later scar. Finally, the hair transplant technicians specially trained for this place the individual grafts into the slits provided with fine jeweller’s tweezers. During this process, the grafts must always stay moist; the hair root may only be touched at certain points and only a few times, in order to protect the growth zones.

What happens after the procedure? Is aftercare at Westfalenklinik ensured?

If you wish, we will see you again the day after your hair transplant at Westfalenklinik to check the first result and carry out a medical hair wash. However, you can just as easily and comfortably do the first hair wash after the treatment yourself at home, following detailed instructions from our hair assistants. For this, our hair team will give you written instructions on washing your hair for the first days after the hair transplant.

Can swelling occur?

Swelling can occur after a hair transplant but subsides on its own after a few days. The headband you are given is intended to prevent swelling from sinking down to your eye area. With small to medium-sized hair transplants, swelling occurs comparatively rarely.

How long does healing take?

Smaller scabs have usually come off after 7 to 10 days, and the scalp has healed so well that, as a rule, little can be seen of the hair transplant. A slightly reddened scalp in the treated areas can remain for up to 3 weeks after a hair transplant. You should under no circumstances loosen these scabs forcibly by scratching. Your personal hair consultant can give you medical tips on removing the scabbing and on faster healing should the scabs actually remain on your scalp for longer than 10 days.

How should I wash my hair after the procedure?

In the first 2 weeks, the hair is washed and cared for following our instructions and with the shampoos and lotions provided by us. Until day 4 after your own-hair transplant, you should wear the head covering that we provide; after that, you can switch to a hat or a loose-fitting cap of your choice.

Can I go out in the sun after the procedure?

You should avoid direct, strong sun exposure, sauna and solarium for 2 weeks.

Can I do sport?

In the first weeks after the hair transplant, also avoid going swimming or doing sports such as football or strength training.

Why does the hair fall out after 3 to 4 weeks?

Within the following 3 to 4 weeks, typically about 90% of the transplanted hair falls out again, which should not worry you at all. For 3 to 6 months after your hair transplant at the latest, new growth begins from the remaining hair roots, which are then active again. The final result of the own-hair transplant can be expected after 10 to 12 months. Your personal hair consultant will therefore contact you again 10 to 12 months after your hair transplant to arrange a follow-up appointment with you for the final assessment of the treatment result.

Your schedule at Westfalenklinik

This is how a hair transplant proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, from the consultation to the result:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Your consultation. In the consultation, our doctors analyse your hair situation and give a prognosis of how your hair loss will develop further. Before the procedure, you discuss the treatment plan, including the hairline drawn on.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The hair transplant is carried out as an outpatient under local anaesthesia. With the FUT method it takes 3 to 6 hours, with the FUE method 5 to 8 hours.

  3. Step 3

    Day 1 to 4

Check-up and head covering. If you wish, we will see you the day after the procedure for a check-up and a medical hair wash. Until day 4, you wear the head covering that we provide.

  4. Step 4

    Day 7 to 10

The scabs come off. The scalp has then largely healed; slight redness can remain for up to 3 weeks.

  5. Step 5

    The first 2 weeks

Care as instructed. You wash and care for your hair with the shampoos and lotions provided and avoid direct, strong sun, sauna and solarium. In the first weeks, you refrain from swimming, football and strength training.

  6. Step 6

    Week 3 to 4

The hair falls out. After 2 to 3 weeks you are usually back out among people. Typically, about 90% of the transplanted hair falls out again at this point, which is a normal process.

  7. Step 7

    Month 2 to 6

Styling and new growth. After a resting phase of about 2 months, you can colour, wash, blow-dry and style your hair again. 3 to 6 months after the hair transplant, new growth begins from the remaining hair roots.

  8. Step 8

    Month 10 to 12

The result. The final result can now be assessed. For this point in time, your hair consultant arranges a follow-up appointment with you at Westfalenklinik.

What does a hair transplant cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

The cost of a hair transplant depends on the method and the extent of the procedure. The FUE technique usually requires a larger, healthy and dense donor area and takes more time. The costs of FUE procedures are therefore somewhat higher than those of FUT procedures with the same number of grafts. We discuss how many grafts are possible for you in the consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

Afterwards we will prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you. The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; follow-up treatments are not added afterwards. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit?

There is typically no age limit. Our oldest patients were well over 70 years old. For patients under 23, however, it must be carefully checked whether a hair transplant is helpful and makes sense at this point in time. In a consultation, our experienced team therefore not only analyses your current hair situation with you, but also gives a qualified prognosis of how the hair loss will develop further. In this way, the solution that suits you individually can be found.

Is a hair transplant an option for every patient with hair loss?

A hair transplant is a generally suitable procedure for treating thinning or bald areas in genetic hair loss. Only in rare cases can it not be recommended. It is also an option for covering scars of all kinds, for beard, eyebrow and eyelash reconstruction and for remodelling chest hair.

When is a hair transplant not possible?

In hair loss caused by illness or stress, even a hair transplant reaches its limits.

Can my hair continue to fall out despite a hair transplant?

The transplanted hair that has taken root comes from the donor area at the back of the head, which is little affected by hereditary hair loss. It therefore usually no longer falls out and continues to grow in its new place. All other hair can, however, continue to be affected by hair loss. Based on the questions asked of you in the hair consultation, our doctors therefore make a prognosis of how your hair loss will develop further. The rule is: the more stable your current hair situation, the better a hair transplant can be planned.

Can the hair be cared for and styled just as before after the hair transplant?

Yes. After a resting phase of about 2 months, you can colour, wash, blow-dry or style your hair as before. Styling the tips of the hair with wax or hair gel is possible again just a few days after the hair transplant, provided it is not applied in direct contact with the scalp. After a hair transplant, styling options are also open to you again that you have probably not been able to achieve for a long time.

What does a hair transplant cost in Dortmund?

The costs depend on the method and the extent of the procedure. With the same number of grafts, FUE is somewhat more expensive than FUT because it takes more time. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote at final prices including statutory VAT. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
