POSE method: endoscopic stomach reduction at the Westfalenklinik

A method against excess weight without an abdominal incision: the POSE method is carried out as an outpatient procedure, and patients can go home again on the same day.

The key points in brief

  • Without an abdominal incisionThe POSE procedure makes the stomach smaller endoscopically, and the procedure is done on an outpatient basis.

  • How it works10 to 16 tiny anchors form targeted gastric folds that reduce the stomach volume by up to a third.

  • Who it is forThe treatment is an option for overweight and obese patients with a BMI of approx. 28 to 42.

Endoscopic stomach reduction using the POSE procedure, now new at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

Westfalenklinik Fachklinik für Plastische und Ästhetische Chirurgie GmbH now offers a method of stomach reduction that is performed endoscopically and without an abdominal incision. Patients can go home on the same day and can usually return to their everyday lives after a few days.

The POSE procedure is a minimally invasive, gentle method of reducing the stomach volume that is intended to support a quicker and longer-lasting feeling of fullness. Based on many years of scientific research and the development of special instruments, changes are made in a single procedure both at the stomach entrance and at the stomach outlet. The procedure is based on a specialised endoscope from the US manufacturer USGI Medical. As of now, this treatment is also available at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

How does the POSE procedure work?

The POSE procedure is a stomach reduction that is performed endoscopically and without external incisions. It has been examined in scientific studies and is intended to support patients in losing weight and keeping it off in the long term. The POSE procedure is intended to help both curb appetite and bring on the feeling of fullness more quickly – two factors on which diets often fail. In this endoscopic stomach reduction and globally patented method, the treating doctor places a series of tiny anchors at specific points inside the stomach and connects them with special, highly resilient threads. In the end, depending on the patient’s size, starting weight and stomach volume, 10 to 16 of these anchors are placed. This creates targeted gastric folds that reduce the stomach volume by up to a third.

Ultimately, the POSE patient feels the effect in two places:

  • Reducing the stomach volume in the upper part of the stomach slows food intake and brings on the feeling of fullness more quickly.
  • Narrowing the stomach outlet prolongs the feeling of fullness and delays the renewed onset of hunger.

The POSE procedure compared with surgical procedures

Because access is endoscopic via the mouth, the procedure requires no incisions in the abdominal wall. This is intended to reduce the risk of infection and shorten the recovery time; how severe the complaints are after the procedure varies from person to person. Other surgical measures for stomach reduction require either several incisions or different access routes through the abdominal wall, which involve their own risks. You can read more about the process on the page on the POSE procedure.

How much weight is lost and kept off in the long term depends, among other things, on diet and exercise after the procedure. Like any medical procedure, the POSE procedure involves risks and side effects, which we explain to you in the consultation. The treatment is an option for overweight and obese patients with a BMI of approx. 28 to 42.
