Skin tightening after weight loss in Dortmund

After a large weight loss, the skin often does not shrink back on its own. At Westfalenklinik, the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery in Dortmund, we tighten the abdomen, upper arms, thighs or several areas in a single procedure.

Skin tightening after weight loss in Dortmund: at Westfalenklinik

Anyone who has lost a lot of weight often has a long road behind them, whether with a gastric balloon, the endo-sleeve, GLP-1 therapy, an operation or under their own steam. If skin remains afterwards, Westfalenklinik in Dortmund is an address for the tightening procedure: the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery does not depend on external surgical centres or other hospitals, either for the operation or for the care afterwards. Consultation, surgery, the night afterwards and aftercare all take place in the same building, with care at night provided by the clinic’s own qualified staff trained in emergency medicine.

Westfalenklinik is located at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 near Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m turn right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building’s parking deck right in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. This means the appointments after the operation are also easy to reach.

Why skin often remains after major weight loss

Skin that has been stretched considerably for a long time loses elasticity. After a large weight loss, it therefore often no longer contracts completely. Typical areas are the abdomen, the inner sides of the upper arms and thighs, the flanks, the buttocks and the breasts.

Excess skin is not just a question of appearance. Skin irritation and inflammation can occur in skin folds, personal hygiene becomes more laborious, and some movements become harder. A tightening procedure removes the excess skin and shapes the contour of the body; it does not serve further weight loss.

The right time for tightening

A tightening procedure makes sense when you have reached your target weight, have kept it stable for at least 6 to 12 months and are in good general health. If you still lose a significant amount of weight after the operation, the skin can become slack again. If you have been treated with a gastric balloon, the endo-sleeve or GLP-1 therapy, we are happy to discuss the timing together with your treatment team.

Before the operation, we examine your skin and tissue, discuss your wishes and clarify whether one area is to be tightened or several. Several tightening procedures can be combined in one procedure or spread over several steps; this depends on your findings and your health.

Which type of tightening suits you?

Which tightening procedure is an option depends on where skin has been left over. At Westfalenklinik, we perform the tummy tuck, the upper arm lift, the thigh lift and the body lift, in which several areas are tightened in one procedure. If the breasts have lost shape after weight loss, a breast lift can make sense.

If stubborn fat deposits remain, they can be treated with liposuction, a lipoedema with lipoedema surgery. Without a classic tightening operation, skin tightening with RENUVION® may be an option, also following liposuction.

Tummy tuckthe abdomen

Excess skin and fatty tissue on the abdomen are removed and the abdominal wall is tightened, and the muscles too if necessary. The scar lies above the pubic hair and, depending on the extent, reaches as far as the pelvic bones, so that it lies beneath swimwear or underwear.

Your schedule at Westfalenklinik

This is how a tightening procedure after weight loss proceeds at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. We examine you, discuss your wishes and plan which areas are tightened when. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The operation. It takes place under general anaesthesia and lasts about 1 to 3.5 hours, depending on the area. Afterwards you stay one to two nights at the clinic.

  3. Step 3

    The first weeks

Rest and compression. You wear a compression garment and avoid sport and heavy physical work. Depending on the area, the stitches are removed after two to three weeks.

  4. Step 4

    After 1 to 2 weeks

Back to everyday life. Most patients are then back out among people; physical work and sport follow later after consultation.

  5. Step 5

    After 4 to 6 weeks

End of compression. The compression garment can usually be taken off. We see you again at Westfalenklinik for a check-up.

  6. Step 6

    After 3 to 6 months

The result. Swelling and bruising have subsided, the skin has healed and the new contours have settled. A stable weight helps to maintain the result for a long time.

What does skin tightening after weight loss cost in Dortmund? Costs and financing

The costs of a tightening procedure depend on the area, the scope of the procedure and the length of the stay in the clinic. If several areas are tightened, the operation is more complex. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, you receive a no-obligation treatment quote. The prices are final prices including statutory VAT: overnight stay, meals, follow-up treatments and the costs of the anaesthetist are not added afterwards. If you wish, follow-up cost insurance against the costs of possible follow-up procedures is available, which we offer at cost price. Financing is possible through our financing partner; you can read more under Financing your treatment.

German statutory health insurers usually regard tightening procedures as an aesthetic correction and mostly do not cover the costs. Exceptions are possible in individual cases, for example with chronic inflammation of the abdominal apron; talk to your health insurer about this beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Why is skin left over after weight loss?

If the skin has been heavily stretched for a long time, it loses elasticity. Major weight loss therefore often leads to an excess of slack skin, especially on the abdomen, upper arms and thighs. This is a common problem particularly after bariatric treatment, in which a lot of weight is lost.

When is the right time for a tightening procedure?

When you have reached your target weight and have kept it stable for at least 6 to 12 months. If you still lose a significant amount of weight after the tightening procedure, the skin can become slack again. We discuss the right timing with you in the consultation.

Does a tightening procedure help with losing weight?

No. A tightening procedure removes excess skin and shapes the body contour; it does not serve further weight loss. For weight loss itself, there are routes such as the gastric balloon, the endo-sleeve or GLP-1 therapy.

Can I have several areas tightened at once?

Yes. In a body lift, several areas are tightened in one procedure. Whether several tightening procedures make sense together or one after the other depends on your findings and your health and is planned individually.

What scars are left?

Every tightening procedure leaves scars, whose course depends on the scope of the procedure. We place the incisions so that they lie beneath underwear or on the inner side of the arms and legs wherever possible. Consistent aftercare and scar treatment help to reduce the visibility of the scars.

Is there skin tightening without an operation?

After major weight loss or liposuction, skin tightening with RENUVION® may be an option, in which the tissue beneath the skin is tightened with helium plasma energy, as a stand-alone minimally invasive treatment or following liposuction. Whether it is an option for you or surgical tightening is needed, we clarify in the consultation.

Does German statutory health insurance cover a tightening procedure after weight loss?

German statutory health insurers mostly regard tightening procedures as an aesthetic correction and therefore usually do not cover the costs. Exceptions in individual cases can be, for example, chronic inflammation of the abdominal apron. Talk to your health insurer beforehand about whether there is a prospect of reimbursement.
