Stomach surgery in Dortmund

A gastric sleeve and a gastric bypass reduce the size of the stomach by means of an operation in cases of severe obesity. With the endo-sleeve, the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund offers a stomach reduction without a surgical incision; we clarify in the consultation whether it is an alternative for you.

Stomach surgery in Dortmund: consultation on stomach reduction at the Westfalenklinik

Stomach surgery is a big step. Before you decide on an operation, it is worth looking at the paths without an incision: at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, we advise you on stomach reduction with the endo-sleeve and the gastric balloon. A personal contact person supports you from the first consultation, and our nutrition coaches help you to change your diet.

The Westfalenklinik is located at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, right on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

When is stomach surgery an option?

For many people, severe obesity is a struggle lasting years. It increases the risk of secondary conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea, and can considerably restrict everyday life. If diets, exercise and other measures have not brought lasting success, a stomach reduction can be the next step, with or without surgery.

The endo-sleeve, the stomach reduction without surgery, is as a rule an option for patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 who are looking for an alternative to gastric sleeve surgery without an incision. With every procedure, it is important that you are prepared to change your diet and lifestyle permanently: how much weight you lose and keep off depends largely on this.

Gastric sleeve or gastric bypass?

Both operations are performed via incisions through the abdominal wall: the stomach is reduced in size from the outside via large or several small access points. With the endo-sleeve, by contrast, the stomach is gathered from the inside, without an incision through the abdominal wall.

With a gastric sleeve, the larger part of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube. With a gastric bypass, a small stomach pouch is created from the upper part of the stomach and connected directly to the small intestine; the rest of the stomach and part of the intestine are bypassed. Which procedure comes into consideration depends, among other things, on your BMI, your accompanying conditions and your eating habits.

Methods compared

Two operations, one route without surgery

The gastric sleeve and gastric bypass make the stomach smaller from the outside, the endo-sleeve from the inside. The most important differences at a glance.

Gastric sleeveSleeve gastrectomy

The larger part of the stomach is removed surgically, leaving a narrow tube. Food continues to take its usual route through the intestine.

Gastric bypassStomach pouch with small intestine

A small stomach pouch is formed from the upper part of the stomach and connected directly to a loop of the small intestine. The rest of the stomach stays in the body, but food bypasses it. As a result, less is eaten and part of the food is absorbed differently.

Endo-sleevewithout surgery

During a gastroscopy, the stomach is gathered from the inside with anchors and sutures, without an incision through the abdominal wall. In the process, it takes on a tube-like shape, which is why the procedure is compared with gastric sleeve surgery. The endo-sleeve is performed at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

Endo-sleeve: stomach reduction without an incision at the Westfalenklinik

With the endo-sleeve, the stomach wall is drawn together from the inside with small anchors and sutures during a gastroscopy so that the stomach loses a large part of its volume. In the process, the stomach takes on a tube-like shape; this is why the procedure is compared with surgical gastric sleeve surgery. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes under twilight sedation or general anaesthesia, and you either go home the same day or stay one night in the clinic.

Because no incisions or access points are made through the abdominal wall, there is no wound there that has to heal. In the first days, however, depending on the procedure, severe nausea and vomiting, lack of fluids and weakness can occur; you receive medication for this and, if necessary, infusions. You can read more about the procedure on the page on the endo-sleeve.

Life after a stomach reduction

After stomach surgery you eat considerably smaller portions, and your body needs permanent support: vitamins and minerals, regular check-ups and a diet that suits your new stomach. After a gastric bypass this is particularly important, because part of the food is absorbed differently.

Like any operation, stomach surgery can lead to bleeding, infections, wound healing problems or thromboses, and leaks can occur at the suture line of the stomach. After a gastric bypass, deficiency symptoms and dumping syndrome are also possible, that is, complaints such as nausea or dizziness after eating. If skin is left over after the weight loss, a tightening procedure or a body lift can follow later.

The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT, and financing is possible through our financing partner; find out more under Financing your treatment.

For the endo-sleeve, German statutory health insurance can cover the costs if the obesity therapy is medically necessary and other measures have not brought lasting success. You can read about all the requirements and the multimodal concept under Costs and German health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What is stomach surgery?

This is the name for operations that permanently make the stomach smaller in cases of severe overweight, above all the gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass. It is also called bariatric surgery. The operation is performed through large incisions or several small incisions in the abdominal wall.

Is there a stomach reduction without surgery?

Yes. With the endo-sleeve, the stomach is gathered from the inside during a gastroscopy, without a surgical incision. It is usually an option with a BMI of 30 to 40 if you are looking for an alternative to gastric sleeve surgery and are prepared to change your diet and lifestyle. A gastric balloon makes the stomach smaller for a limited time, from a BMI of 27.

What risks does stomach surgery carry?

Like any operation, stomach surgery can lead to bleeding, infections, wound healing problems or thromboses; leaks can occur at the suture line of the stomach. After a gastric bypass, deficiency symptoms and dumping syndrome are also possible. The surgeons provide information about all risks before the operation.

Does German statutory health insurance cover a stomach reduction?

For the endo-sleeve, reimbursement may be possible if the obesity therapy is medically necessary, usually from a BMI of 40 or from 35 with accompanying conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. This requires evidence of conservative therapies over at least six months and a medical report. Find out more under Costs and German health insurance.
