Stomach reduction in Dortmund: what determines the costs

The treatment costs of a stomach reduction in Dortmund depend above all on the method chosen, that is, gastric balloon or endo-sleeve, and on the extent of the support through nutrition and fitness coaching, the app and follow-up appointments. We clarify which route suits you in a personal consultation at Westfalenklinik. After that, you receive a no-obligation treatment quote that lists all services. The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; follow-up treatments are not added later.

Consultation, treatment and aftercare take place at Westfalenklinik in Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 near the Signal Iduna Park. By car, take the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck; from the main station, you can reach us with the U45 to Stadtgarten and the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

What does a gastric balloon cost in Dortmund?

Four packages are available for treatment with the gastric balloon. They differ in how closely nutrition and fitness coaches support you during the dwell time of about 4, 6 or 12 months. The standard package starts at €2,890. You decide together with us in the consultation which package suits your situation. Financing in instalments is possible.

What does an endo-sleeve cost, and when does German statutory health insurance pay?

For self-pay patients, the costs for the endo-sleeve start at €9,990. The price can vary depending on the care model. A treatment and cost plan provides clarity about the costs before the procedure.

Whether German statutory health insurance covers the costs depends on medical guidelines. In principle, reimbursement may be possible if obesity therapy is medically necessary and other measures have not brought lasting success. Private insurers decide on a case-by-case basis; if the endo-sleeve is classified as medically necessary, many companies cover the costs partially or in full.

When German statutory health insurance can cover a stomach reduction

German statutory health insurance funds assess applications on the basis of fixed guidelines. Cost coverage is only possible if these criteria are met:

  • BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more with accompanying conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
  • Evidence of conservative therapies carried out without success for at least six months, such as nutritional advice, exercise and behavioural therapy.
  • Medical report confirming the medical necessity of the endoscopic stomach reduction.

This means the stomach reduction is assessed as a medically necessary treatment of obesity, not as an aesthetic procedure. Central to approval is the multimodal concept (MMK), a structured pre-treatment with five pillars:

  1. Nutritional advice in five sessions, with documentation of eating habits and preparation for the diet after the procedure.
  2. Exercise log with an adapted exercise programme that documents physical activity.
  3. Psychological report to rule out eating disorders and to support changes in behaviour.
  4. Stomach endoscopy (gastroscopy) to check the health of the stomach and rule out reasons against the procedure.
  5. Full blood count to identify deficiencies and as a basis for later aftercare.

Your route to a stomach reduction covered by German health insurance

This is how a stomach reduction covered by German health insurance works if you are advised at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation. In the no-obligation consultation, we assess your starting position: BMI, accompanying conditions and previous attempts to lose weight.

  2. Step 2

    At least 6 months

The multimodal concept. Nutritional advice, exercise and psychological support document that you are actively contributing to your weight reduction; in addition, there are a gastroscopy and a full blood count.

  3. Step 3

    Before the procedure

Application and report. The German statutory health insurance fund assesses the application on the basis of fixed guidelines. This includes a medical report confirming the medical necessity.

  4. Step 4

    Day of the procedure

The procedure. Once cost coverage has been approved, the stomach reduction takes place on the planned date.

  5. Step 5

    Afterwards

Aftercare. Follow-up appointments and nutritional support help you to change your diet and lifestyle permanently.

For the endo-sleeve, the costs for self-pay patients start at €9,990; the price can vary depending on the support model. Before the procedure, you receive a treatment and cost plan.

Does German statutory health insurance cover a stomach reduction?

For the endo-sleeve, reimbursement may be possible if obesity therapy is medically necessary and other measures have not brought lasting success. German statutory health insurers assess this on the basis of fixed guidelines, usually from a BMI of 40 or from 35 with accompanying conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. The decision is made in each individual case.

What does German statutory health insurance need to cover the costs?

In addition to the BMI and the accompanying conditions, proof of conservative therapies carried out without success for at least six months, such as nutritional advice, exercise and behavioural therapy, and a medical report confirming the medical necessity of the endoscopic stomach reduction.

What is the multimodal concept (MMK)?

The MMK is a structured preliminary treatment with five pillars: nutritional advice, an exercise log, a psychological report, a gastroscopy and a full blood count. It documents that you are actively contributing to your weight reduction and are medically supported, and is regarded as a decisive criterion for cost coverage.

Does private health insurance pay?

Private insurers decide on a case-by-case basis. If the endo-sleeve is classified as medically necessary, many companies cover the costs in part or in full.
