What to do about scars after breast augmentation?

Many women who decide on a breast augmentation feel that their breasts are too small or too saggy and feel psychologically burdened by this. As every breast augmentation leaves scars, it is important to care for them as early and as correctly as possible.

The key points in brief

  • ProtectDirectly after the operation the scars must not be under tension; you should avoid sport, sunbathing and sunbeds.

  • CareCreams only after the stitches have been removed, later gentle daily massages and silicone. It can take up to two years for a scar to mature.

  • ConsultIf you have pain, itching, chills or fever, speak to your doctor straight away.

The aim of scar care is that conspicuous scar tissue affects the result of the breast augmentation as little as possible.

Thanks to modern surgical techniques, the surgeons can keep scarring to a minimum. They take care to make only a few incisions and, where possible, to place them inconspicuously. Typical places to insert implants are under the breast fold, in the armpit or at the areola. However, scars can also remain after breast augmentation with your own fat.

In addition, responsible doctors pay attention to choosing suitable implants that are well tolerated, protected against leakage and can remain in the body for a long time. This is intended to reduce the risk of a further operation for correction or implant removal, which could lead to further scars. At our clinic we therefore rely on products from the companies Polytech, Motiva and Mentor, with which we have had good experience (more about the manufacturers of breast implants).

6 helpful tips on scar care after breast augmentation

Apart from choosing the right bra or suitable compression garments and daily scar hygiene, methods such as massages with scar gel can be started around two weeks after the operation.

Protecting scars until healed

It is important not to start scar care immediately after breast augmentation, as the scar still has to be protected directly after the operation. During this time the scars must not be under tension or stretched crosswise.

For this reason, any sporting activity should be avoided. In addition, sunbathing (as well as visits to a sunbed studio) should be avoided. Giving up alcohol and nicotine can also have a positive effect on wound healing. If the scars swell or turn red, the doctor can, in individual cases, carry out cortisone treatment to relieve this.

Using creams only after the stitches have been removed

Alongside daily hygiene, greasing the scar is particularly helpful. Later, a silicone ointment can also be used. However, this must be agreed individually with the doctor. Vaseline, a wound and healing ointment or any rich but fragrance-free body lotion can also be used daily. A special scar gel is available directly from the treating clinic or doctor’s practice and from the pharmacy.

Scar care from the inside out

With an intact immune system, the body can work on wound healing from the inside out. For this it is important that the patient eats a healthy, balanced diet and takes in sufficient vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet, not only during the acute phase, supports wound healing so that as little as possible of the scars can be seen one year after the breast augmentation.

Long-term daily scar massage after complete healing

Applying cream to the scar every day helps the healing process. However, the scar may still hurt in the meantime. It makes no difference whether, after the breast augmentation, the scar is in the breast fold, in the armpit or at the areola. Cream should be applied in any case. Once the scar has healed, a gentle massage can be carried out several times a day when applying cream.

Scar care with silicone

Silicone ointments can help to make scars softer, lighter and smoother. Because it can take up to two years for a scar to mature fully, silicone ointments or silicone gel, but also silicone patches, can help to support this process. The gel can be applied thinly to all affected areas and forms a thin film there. After breast augmentation, it is also suitable for scars under the armpit.

Help with wound healing disorders

After breast augmentation, scars can cause pain or itch. Accompanying symptoms such as chills or even fever can also occur. In this case the patient should consult the responsible doctor straight away, in order to clarify the causes and have the symptoms treated.
