After lipoedema surgery in Dortmund: check-ups at Westfalenklinik

The treatment of lipoedema is not complete with the operation. The weeks afterwards play a part in deciding how well the tissue heals and how symptoms and body shape develop. If you are operated on at Westfalenklinik, we will see you again at the follow-up appointments in the same building; a personal contact person accompanies you until the final check-up.

For these appointments, you come to Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 and very close to Signal Iduna Park. If you come by car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building's parking deck directly in front of the entrance. Without a car, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and continue with the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

Well prepared for the weeks after the operation

Much of what makes the time after lipoedema surgery easier can be arranged beforehand. On the day of treatment, we welcome you at the clinic in the morning; after admission, there is a final conversation with your treating doctor. A little preparation helps for the days afterwards:

  • Someone to accompany you on the journey home; after anaesthesia you do not drive yourself
  • Comfortable, loose clothing that fits over the compression garments
  • Help with the housework for the first few days
  • Coordinating the weeks afterwards with your employer in good time
  • Clarifying open questions about compression with us in advance

This way, after the procedure you can concentrate fully on healing.

Your timeline after lipoedema surgery at Westfalenklinik

  1. Step 1

    Day of surgery

Stay. Depending on the extent, you go home on the same day or stay in the clinic for 1 to 2 nights for observation. At night, you are cared for by our own qualified staff trained in emergency medicine. You wear the compression garments from the start.

  2. Step 2

    The first few days

Rest. Feelings of tension, swelling and bruising are part of it now. Take it easy at home and do not yet return to your workplace.

  3. Step 3

    After 7 to 10 days

Back among people. Many patients are back out among people during this time. Compression continues day and night.

  4. Step 4

    After about 2 weeks

Everyday life and work. With compression garments, a return to everyday life and the workplace is possible in many cases, and often later with physically heavy work.

  5. Step 5

    Weeks 4 to 6

Regeneration. The body continues to recover, and the swelling gradually subsides.

  6. Step 6

    Weeks 6 to 8

End of the follow-up treatment. Up to this point, you usually wear compression during the day and at night. We discuss how things continue afterwards at the check-up in Dortmund.

Compression after lipoedema surgery: why it is part of it

After liposuction, the tissue in the legs or arms has to reorganise itself. The compression garments apply even pressure and support healing:

  • They help prevent dimples and unevenness in the skin surface
  • They counteract accumulations of water and lymph in the tissue
  • They support the tissue while it heals
  • They make the return to everyday life easier

They are usually worn for about 6 to 8 weeks, day and night, but for at least 6 weeks. Whether you should continue wearing compression afterwards depends on your findings and your symptoms.

Lymphatic drainage, exercise and sport after the operation

Manual lymphatic drainage

Lymphatic drainage can be useful after the operation to ease swelling. Whether and how often is decided by your doctor, who prescribes it for you.

Movement in everyday life

How much movement is good for you in the first few days, we discuss with you before you go home.

Sport

You wait with sport until healing allows it. We set the time in consultation with you at your follow-up appointments in Dortmund.

Symptoms, scars and skin after lipoedema surgery

Pain and swelling

Feelings of tension, tenderness and bruising are normal in the first few days. They can usually be eased with painkillers and subside as healing progresses.

Small scars

Small punctures of about 4 to 5 mm are enough for the liposuction. The scars usually fade over time; how they develop varies from person to person.

The skin

In some cases, skin tightening may become necessary after liposuction. Whether that is an option for you can be read under Skin tightening after lipoedema surgery.

How long you are out of action after lipoedema surgery

How long you need to take it easy depends mainly on how many body regions were treated and how much fatty tissue was removed. In extensive lipoedema, the treatment can be spread over several sessions for safety reasons. We then plan a separate recovery period for each session.

Guideline values from Westfalenklinik. How long it takes in your case depends on the extent of the procedure; we discuss it with you beforehand.

With compression garments, a return to the workplace is possible in many cases after about 2 weeks. If your work involves a lot of standing, lifting or carrying, it can take longer. Plan the weeks after the operation together with us and your employer, therefore, before you fix an appointment.

In the long term: can lipoedema come back after the operation?

The fat cells that were suctioned out have been removed. The remaining tissue can, however, continue to change, for example with weight gain or during phases of hormonal change such as pregnancy or the menopause. What you can do yourself:

  • Keeping a stable weight
  • Moving regularly
  • Wearing compression if we recommend it to you
  • Coming in for a check-up early if you have new symptoms

How symptoms and body shape develop after the procedure varies from person to person and depends, among other things, on the stage and extent of the condition. We are happy to answer questions about this during aftercare in Dortmund or beforehand in the consultation on lipoedema surgery.

What does aftercare after lipoedema surgery in Dortmund cost?

Westfalenklinik's treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT: follow-up treatments, overnight stay, meals and the costs of the anaesthetist are not added afterwards. On request, follow-up cost insurance is also available, which covers the costs of possible follow-up procedures and is offered at cost price.

What your lipoedema surgery costs in total depends on the extent of the treatment and the number of body regions affected; you will receive your no-obligation treatment quote after your first consultation. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more under Financing your treatment. When German statutory health insurance covers the costs is explained under Lipoedema surgery for patients with German statutory health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How long am I signed off work after lipoedema surgery?

That depends on the extent of the treatment, the number of body regions treated and your occupation. With compression garments, a return to everyday life and work is possible in many cases after about 2 weeks. Anyone who does physically heavy work often needs longer. Your treating doctor certifies your inability to work.

How long do I stay in the clinic after lipoedema surgery?

After smaller procedures, you can often leave Westfalenklinik on the same day. After larger procedures, you stay with us for 1 to 2 nights for observation, for your safety. What makes sense in your case, we discuss before the operation.

How long do I have to wear compression after lipoedema surgery?

Usually about 6 to 8 weeks, day and night. The compression is intended to prevent dimples and unevenness of the skin and to counteract accumulations of water or lymph in the tissue. We discuss how things continue afterwards during aftercare.

Is there pain after lipoedema surgery?

In the first few days, feelings of tension, tenderness, swelling and bruising are normal. The symptoms can usually be eased with painkillers and subside as healing progresses. How severe they are varies from patient to patient.

Can lipoedema come back after the operation?

The fat cells that were suctioned out have been removed. The remaining tissue can, however, change, for example with weight gain or at times of hormonal change such as pregnancy or the menopause. A stable weight, exercise and compression, if we recommend it, help to maintain the result. How the tissue develops in your case cannot be predicted.

Do I need lymphatic drainage after lipoedema surgery?

Manual lymphatic drainage can be useful after the operation to ease swelling. Whether and how often is decided by your doctor, who prescribes it for you. We agree this with you during aftercare.

When may I do sport again after lipoedema surgery?

Sport is only possible again after consultation, once healing allows it. We discuss the right time with you at your follow-up appointments.

Do I need skin tightening after liposuction?

Not always. In some cases, skin tightening may become necessary after liposuction, for example on the thighs or upper arms. Whether that is an option in your case, your treating doctor will clarify with you. More on this under Skin tightening after lipoedema surgery.

What does aftercare after lipoedema surgery in Dortmund cost?

Westfalenklinik's treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT. Follow-up treatments, overnight stay, meals and anaesthesia are not added afterwards. You will receive your no-obligation treatment quote after your first consultation; financing is possible through our financing partner.
