Skin tightening after lipoedema in Dortmund: liposuction and tightening under one roof

If your lipoedema surgery is carried out at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, a later tightening of the skin also takes place under the same roof. The doctors who plan your liposuction know your findings and, after healing, can assess whether and where the skin needs tightening. For this, the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery does not depend on external surgical centres or affiliated hospitals, not even for care after the procedure.

The clinic is located at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, directly on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s car park deck directly in front of the entrance. From the main station, take the U45 to Stadtgarten and from there the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. This way you can reach us from all over the city for consultation, procedure and check-ups.

Why the skin can stay loose after lipoedema surgery

In lipoedema surgery, pathologically increased fatty tissue is suctioned off, in advanced lipoedema sometimes several litres. The skin that previously stretched around this tissue has to retract afterwards. How well this succeeds depends on several things:

  • The elasticity of the skin, which declines with age
  • The amount of fatty tissue suctioned off
  • The extent of the lipoedema, for example tissue flaps in stage 3
  • Marked weight fluctuations in the past

In some cases, tightening of the skin may therefore become necessary after liposuction; it is not necessary in every case. Your treating doctor will inform you before the lipoedema surgery whether this could be an option in your case.

When tightening is decided on at Westfalenklinik

We plan surgical tightening only once the liposuction has healed, swelling has subsided and the tissue has settled. Until then, compression helps the skin to fit against the tissue again. Your weight should also be stable, because tightening is not a method of losing weight. You discuss the timing with your doctor at the check-up appointments in Dortmund.

Things are different with RENUVION®: the procedure can be applied directly after the liposuction in the same procedure, through the same puncture sites. Whether this makes sense for you is something we discuss before the lipoedema surgery.

Your path to skin tightening in Dortmund

  1. Step 1

    Before the lipoedema surgery

Briefing. Already in the consultation on liposuction we discuss whether, given your findings, tightening could be an option later and whether RENUVION® makes sense in the same procedure.

  2. Step 2

    After the liposuction

Let it heal. You wear the compression as discussed, swelling subsides and the tissue settles.

  3. Step 3

    At the check-ups

Assessment. Your doctor looks at whether and where excess skin has remained and discusses the result with you.

  4. Step 4

    If necessary

Planning. You discuss the technique, incision placement, scars and risks and receive a personal treatment quote.

  5. Step 5

    Afterwards

Tightening and aftercare. After the tightening you wear a compression garment, and the check-ups again take place at Westfalenklinik.

The options for skin tightening at Westfalenklinik

  1. 01

    Thigh lift

A thigh lift removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the thighs, especially on the inner sides, where the skin often slackens after lipoedema surgery. The procedure takes about 2 to 3 hours, is carried out under general anaesthesia and involves one night in the clinic.

  2. 02

    Upper arm lift

In the upper arm lift, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed from the inside of the upper arms. It takes about 1 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia, and the scar lies on the inside of the upper arm.

  3. 03

    Tummy tuck

If excess skin has remained on the abdomen as well, a tummy tuck may be an option. Depending on the findings, it extends from the lower abdomen to the costal margin.

  4. 04

    Body lift

A body lift tightens several body regions in one procedure, for example the abdomen, flanks, thighs and buttocks. A prerequisite is a stable weight.

  5. 05

    RENUVION®

RENUVION® combines helium plasma with a targeted supply of energy and is intended to tighten moderately slack skin in a minimally invasive way. For severely slack skin, surgical tightening is often the more suitable method.

Scars and healing after tightening

Surgical tightening is not possible without scars. The incisions are planned so that the scars lie as inconspicuously as possible; aftercare and scar care can help them fade over time. After the operation you wear a compression garment for a few weeks, and depending on the procedure the stitches are removed after about 2 to 3 weeks. With RENUVION®, only small scars form at the puncture sites.

Like any operation, tightening carries risks, for example wound healing disorders, post-operative bleeding or inflammation. We brief you on this in detail before the procedure and take your general state of health into account.

Does German statutory health insurance pay for skin tightening after lipoedema?

Since October 2025, German statutory health insurance can in principle cover liposuction for lipoedema at any stage if the requirements are met, more on this under Lipoedema surgery as a patient with statutory health insurance. Tightening of the skin is to be seen separately from this: skin tightening after liposuction is financed neither by statutory nor by private health insurance. As a self-pay patient, you can have this treatment carried out at the Westfalenklinik.

What does skin tightening after lipoedema cost in Dortmund? Quote and financing

The costs depend on the body region, the scope of the procedure and whether several areas or methods are combined; with RENUVION®, in particular on whether the treatment is combined with the liposuction. After your consultation at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. The prices are final prices including statutory VAT, accommodation, meals, follow-up treatments and anaesthesia are not added afterwards. A tightening can also be financed through our financing partner, more under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

When is skin tightening needed after lipoedema surgery?

When so much skin is left after the liposuction that it no longer fits sufficiently against the tissue. This depends mainly on the amount suctioned off, the elasticity of the skin and the extent of the lipoedema. Tightening is not needed in every case. Whether it is an option in your case, your doctor clarifies with you.

How long after lipoedema surgery can the skin be tightened?

Surgical tightening is planned only once the treatment has healed, swelling has subsided and the tissue has settled. Your weight should also be stable. We determine the timing individually with you.

Can the skin be tightened in the same procedure as the liposuction?

RENUVION® can be used directly after a liposuction in the same procedure, through the same puncture sites. It is suitable for moderately slack skin. Whether surgical tightening is additionally needed often becomes clear only after healing.

Does German statutory health insurance pay for skin tightening after lipoedema?

No. Even if German statutory health insurance covers liposuction for lipoedema, skin tightening is a separate procedure that is financed neither by statutory nor by private health insurance. As a self-pay patient, you can have the tightening carried out at Westfalenklinik.

Do scars remain after skin tightening?

Yes, surgical tightening leaves scars, which can be visible. The incision placement is planned so that the scars lie as inconspicuously as possible, for example on the inside of the thigh or upper arm. With RENUVION®, only small scars form at the puncture sites.

Does compression help against loose skin after lipoedema surgery?

After liposuction, compression is intended to reduce swelling and give the skin support while it fits against the tissue again. It cannot remove a marked excess of skin, however; tightening is an option for that.

What does skin tightening after lipoedema surgery cost in Dortmund?

The costs depend on the body region, the scope of the procedure and whether several areas or techniques are combined. After your consultation at Westfalenklinik you receive a no-obligation treatment quote with final prices; financing is possible through our financing partner.
