Lipoedema surgery as a self-pay patient in Dortmund

Not every patient takes the route through German statutory health insurance. How self-paid lipoedema surgery at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund works, what the costs depend on and what private health insurance has to say about it.

Lipoedema surgery as a self-pay patient in Dortmund: consultation, procedure and aftercare in-house

If you pay for lipoedema surgery yourself, you plan it directly with us: at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund you are examined and advised, operated on in the same building and asked to come back for aftercare. As a specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, it does not depend on external surgical centres, partner clinics or hospital departments for this, nor for care after the procedure. Anaesthesia is provided by anaesthetists who specialise in plastic and aesthetic surgery, and at night you are looked after by our own qualified staff trained in emergency medicine.

The clinic has stood at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4 for 25 years, directly on the B1/A40, very close to the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. From Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

Why patients pay for lipoedema surgery themselves

Since October 2025, German statutory health insurance can in principle cover liposuction for lipoedema at any stage, but only under fixed conditions. Not every patient meets the conditions, and not every patient wants to take the prescribed route. The reasons differ:

  • The conditions of German statutory health insurance are not met, for example regarding BMI
  • You do not want to wait out the six months of preliminary treatment
  • You are privately insured and sort out the costs yourself
  • You want to plan the date and order freely

One thing does not change as a result: whether and when an operation makes medical sense for you is decided by the examination. We look at your findings, talk about your symptoms and previous treatments and advise you honestly, even if we first recommend a different step.

What does lipoedema surgery cost as a self-pay patient in Dortmund? What the price depends on

The treated regions

Lipoedema can occur on the legs, arms, hips and other parts of the body. The more areas are treated, the more involved the procedure becomes. You can read more about the individual regions under Lipoedema in the legs and Lipoedema in the arms.

The amount of tissue

On the arms, a smaller procedure often involves a few hundred millilitres; with pronounced findings on the legs, considerably more. The amount helps determine the duration and effort of the operation.

The number of sessions

If a lot of tissue has to be removed, the treatment is spread over several sessions for safety reasons. Each session is a procedure in its own right, with anaesthesia, a stay and aftercare.

We therefore do not state a flat-rate sum. After the first consultation at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund you will receive a treatment quote with no obligation, tailored to your findings and the planned extent. The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT: overnight stay, meals, follow-up treatments and the costs of the anaesthetist are not added afterwards. On request, follow-up cost insurance against the costs of possible follow-up procedures is available, which we offer at cost price. If skin tightening is added later, it is a procedure in its own right; you can read more about this under Skin tightening after lipoedema surgery.

Your path as a self-pay patient at Westfalenklinik

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Make an appointment. You can book your consultation appointment in Dortmund online or arrange it by phone on 0231 54 504 900.

  2. Step 2

    First consultation

Examination and discussion. We examine and measure the legs and arms, assess the extent and stage and check whether lymphoedema is also present.

  3. Step 3

    Afterwards

Your quote. You receive a treatment quote and take your time to weigh it up at your leisure. We also answer questions after the conversation.

  4. Step 4

    Day of surgery

The procedure in-house. Depending on the extent, liposuction takes about 2 to 5 hours. Afterwards you either go home the same day or stay with us for 1 to 2 nights.

  5. Step 5

    6 to 8 weeks

Compression and aftercare. You wear compression garments and come to the clinic for check-ups. You can read what these weeks look like under After lipoedema surgery.

Planning lipoedema surgery in Dortmund with your own calendar

As a self-pay patient you set the date of the operation together with us; at Westfalenklinik treatment is in principle possible on any day of the week. Include the weeks afterwards in your planning: after the procedure you wear compression garments for about 6 to 8 weeks, you are usually back out among people after 7 to 10 days, and it takes about 4 to 6 weeks until you have fully recovered. Choose a time, therefore, when work and family leave room for this recovery.

If the treatment is spread over several sessions, we also discuss the order, for example whether the legs or the arms are treated first, and the interval between the procedures. All appointments take place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund.

What to bring to the consultation at Westfalenklinik

  • Findings and doctors’ letters on your lipoedema
  • Prescriptions and receipts for compression and lymphatic drainage
  • A list of your medications
  • Your questions about the process, costs and recovery

We will discuss together which of this matters for your private insurance.

Private health insurance: clarify in advance

Whether private insurance covers lipoedema surgery depends on your individual tariff. Before submitting an application, clarify whether lipoedema is included in your schedule of benefits and whether there are exclusions for certain treatments; if in doubt, it is worth speaking directly to your insurer. Ask your questions before the treatment and have the answer given to you in writing. Some insurers, such as Hanse Merkur, offer special programmes for patients with lipoedema.

You should keep findings reports, prescriptions and receipts for previous treatments carefully. You can submit the treatment quote you receive after the first consultation, together with all evidence of therapy, to your insurer for review.

Financing lipoedema surgery

You do not have to bear the costs all at once: financing is possible through our financing partner. You can read how this works under Financing your treatment.

Rather via German statutory health insurance?

If you meet, or would like to meet, the conditions of German statutory health insurance, liposuction can also be covered by health insurance. We check your entitlement and support you through the application to your health insurer.

You can read what is needed for this under Lipoedema surgery as a statutory health insurance patient. If you are still undecided, we will discuss both routes with you in the consultation at Westfalenklinik.

Frequently asked questions

What does lipoedema surgery cost as a self-pay patient in Dortmund?

That depends on how many parts of the body are treated, how much tissue is suctioned off and whether the treatment is spread over several sessions. After the first consultation at Westfalenklinik you receive a treatment quote with no obligation, tailored to your findings. The prices are final prices including statutory VAT.

Why do women choose lipoedema surgery as a self-pay patient?

Some do not meet the requirements of German statutory health insurance or do not want to wait out the prescribed period of preliminary treatment; others are privately insured. Regardless of this, we check during the examination whether an operation makes medical sense for you.

Does private health insurance pay for lipoedema surgery?

That depends on your individual tariff. Before the treatment, clarify whether lipoedema is included in your schedule of benefits, whether there are exclusions and which documents are required. With a specialist’s diagnosis, documented conservative therapy and a stable weight, you have the most important evidence together.

Can I finance the treatment?

Yes, financing is possible through our financing partner. More on this under Financing your treatment.

As a self-pay patient, do I also have to undergo conservative therapy beforehand?

The six months of preliminary treatment are a condition of German statutory health insurance. Whether compression, lymphatic drainage and exercise make sense in your case before an operation, we will discuss with you after the examination.

Can I be treated as a self-pay patient with a higher BMI?

From a BMI of 35, liposuction via German statutory health insurance first requires treatment of the excess weight; from 40, it is not possible via statutory health insurance. As a self-pay patient, we advise you on your individual options and alternatives.
