Cellulite treatment in Dortmund

We advise you in person on the treatment of cellulite at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund. Here you can read how cellulite develops, how it differs from lipoedema and what a treatment can achieve.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite, often also called orange peel skin, shows as dimples and unevenness of the skin, mostly on the thighs, buttocks and hips. It is not a disease and does not cause pain. After puberty, most women have cellulite to a greater or lesser degree, including slim and athletic women. It is rare in men.

How cellulite develops

Beneath the skin lies the subcutaneous fatty tissue, which is traversed by strands of connective tissue. In women, these strands run mostly vertically. When small lobules of fat push upwards between them while the strands pull the skin down at individual points, the typical dimples develop. Factors that play a role include predisposition, hormones, the firmness of the connective tissue and fluctuations in body weight.

How pronounced cellulite is

Doctors distinguish several grades:

  • Grade 0: The skin is smooth, even when you squeeze it together.
  • Grade 1: Dimples only show when you squeeze the skin together.
  • Grade 2: Dimples are visible when standing, but not when lying down.
  • Grade 3: Dimples are visible both when standing and when lying down.

Cellulite or lipoedema?

Sturdy legs with dimples in the skin are not always cellulite. In lipoedema, the fatty tissue on the legs or arms increases pathologically and on both sides. Typical signs are pain on pressure and touch, bruises that develop quickly, and a disproportion between a slim upper body and sturdy legs, while hands and feet stay slim. Cellulite, by contrast, does not hurt. If you are unsure, have the cause medically investigated. You can read how the conditions differ under Lipoedema, lymphoedema or cellulite?.

What a treatment can achieve

A treatment can improve the appearance of the skin. According to current knowledge, cellulite cannot be eliminated, because the structure of the connective tissue remains. How clearly and for how long the appearance of the skin changes depends, among other things, on the grade of the cellulite, on the connective tissue and on body weight. Regular exercise, a stable weight and a balanced diet can support the connective tissue.
