Sweat gland treatment in Dortmund: consultation and treatment in one place

Consultation, treatment and aftercare take place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund. Surgical suction is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, and treatment with a muscle relaxant requires no incision at all; you usually go home again on the same day. A personal contact accompanies you from the first consultation to the final follow-up examination.

The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has been at home in Rosemeyerstraße for 25 years, directly on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park in the building’s car park. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

When hyperhidrosis treatment in Dortmund can help

For excessive sweating

  • under the arms (armpits)
  • on the hands or feet
  • on the back
  • in the intimate area

Sweating to a normal extent is not only entirely natural but also healthy and extremely important for our skin and for regulating our body temperature. Uncontrolled sweat production regardless of temperature and activity, on the other hand, is the result of a hereditary disorder of the autonomic nervous system and can become a real burden. So-called hyperhidrosis, which affects around 800,000 people in Germany alone, can place a heavy strain on the self-confidence of those affected. Patients feel neither comfortable nor fresh, and the mere fear of another bout of sweating can itself trigger the next one. Besides the hands and feet, the areas of the body under the arms are particularly affected.

What exactly is meant by hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a clinical condition that basically means the excessive production of sweat, i.e. sweat production that goes well beyond the normal level. In general, medicine distinguishes between two types of hyperhidrosis: generalised and focal hyperhidrosis. While generalised hyperhidrosis usually appears over large areas of the chest, neck or face, a typical sign of focal hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating under the arms, on the hands or on the soles of the feet.

Regardless of the form of hyperhidrosis, those affected not infrequently develop a strong sense of shame from the consequences. For what people with unremarkable sweating can tackle themselves relatively easily by cooling down, showering or using deodorant, those affected by hyperhidrosis can often only get under control with the help of sweat gland treatment.

What treatment options are there for excessive sweating?

To treat hyperhidrosis, our doctors at Westfalenklinik offer you two procedures as part of sweat gland treatment: surgical sweat gland suction and treatment with a muscle relaxant. The aim is to significantly reduce the production of underarm sweat in the treated area and thus make your everyday life easier. How strong the effect is and how long it lasts varies from person to person and depends on the chosen procedure; we discuss this with you in the consultation at Westfalenklinik Dortmund.

Methods compared

Suction or muscle relaxant?

Both procedures are outpatient. They differ in whether the sweat glands are removed or whether an active substance reduces their sweat production.

A tumescent solution loosens the sweat glands and reduces the tendency to bleed. A suction cannula then removes the glands together with the surrounding subcutaneous fatty tissue via two small skin incisions.

How surgical sweat gland treatment proceeds at Westfalenklinik

Surgical sweat gland treatment takes the form of a kind of suction of the body’s sweat-producing glands. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is carried out under local anaesthesia. First, to loosen the sweat glands and reduce the tendency to bleed, a tumescent solution modified specially for sweat gland suction, consisting of saline, adrenaline, an anaesthetic and enzymes, is injected into the affected areas, for example into the armpits. A suction cannula connected to a vacuum pump is inserted into the armpit through two small skin incisions, and the sweat glands are removed together with the surrounding subcutaneous fatty tissue.

Alternative without surgery: treating hyperhidrosis with a muscle relaxant

An alternative for excessive sweating is treatment with a muscle relaxant. Entirely without a surgical procedure, in many cases a single injection can be enough to reduce sweat production significantly. Particularly for focal hyperhidrosis, that is, rather locally pronounced pathological sweating under the arms, on the hands and on the soles of the feet, sweat gland treatment with a muscle relaxant is often used.

The course of sweat gland treatment at Westfalenklinik

This is how a sweat gland treatment at Westfalenklinik proceeds, from the consultation to the full effect:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Dortmund. We clarify where and how much you sweat, and discuss which procedure is an option for you. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    On the day of treatment

About 30 minutes, outpatient. The suction is carried out under local anaesthesia; the muscle relaxant is injected without a surgical procedure. You can usually leave the clinic on the same day.

  3. Step 3

    Up to week 2

Compression after the suction. After the surgical procedure you rest for a day and wear the compression shirt fitted during the treatment for two weeks. This is not necessary after treatment with a muscle relaxant.

  4. Step 4

    After 1 to 2 weeks

The effect. A noticeable improvement can appear after just a few hours, and you see the full effect after one to two weeks.
