Removing varicose veins in Dortmund: examination and treatment in one place

Consultation, vein examination, treatment and aftercare take place at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund. The diseased vein is closed from the inside with the endovenous laser or with radiofrequency, on an outpatient basis and without a larger incision; you can leave the clinic the same day. If twilight sedation or anaesthesia is needed, it is provided by the clinic’s anaesthetists, who specialise in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

The Westfalenklinik is located at Rosemeyerstraße 2–4, right by the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit, turn right into Wittekindstraße and after 700 m turn right into Rosemeyerstraße; you park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim.

Varicose veins are a disease of the superficial veins

Probably every woman, and surely many a man too, would like to have beautiful legs. Thread veins and varicose veins are accordingly a major nuisance, yet they are widespread: one in five women and one in six men in Germany suffer from varicose veins. What many people do not know: varicose veins are more than just a “cosmetic flaw”; they are a health risk to be taken seriously.

A disease of the superficial venous system shows itself in the formation of varicose veins (varices) and their complications. These include inflammation, variceal bleeding and leg ulcers. A disease of the deep venous system, on the other hand, means a considerable disturbance of the blood circulation. These veins cannot redirect the blood, which in the long term leads to a chronic venous disease. Diseases of the deep veins can therefore lead, for example, to thromboses, a pulmonary embolism or chronic destruction of the venous valves.

Vein diseases should always be examined and treated in good time

Whether a superficial or a deep vein disease: left untreated, both conditions can severely impair the functioning of the veins and, in the worst case, lead from an initial tendency of the legs to swell, through skin discolouration, ultimately to an open leg (ulcus cruris venosum).

Modern varicose vein treatment: removing varicose veins without open surgery

Modern procedures that are used today in particular by specialists in vein disorders are endovenous laser treatment (ELVeS Radial™, Intros Lina) or the radiofrequency procedure (VNUS Closure Fast™, Celon RFITT). Both procedures have been clinically tested many times and differ only in their technical application. Both manage without larger incisions and are usually less stressful for patients than conventional forms of therapy.

The varicose vein treatment we recommend is an endovenous treatment with a laser. Put simply, this means the following: our doctors insert the special laser through a tiny opening in the skin, similar to an infusion or a simple blood draw. It then delivers radiation into the vein wall in a targeted way and thereby closes the vein. In many cases, this treatment makes it possible to avoid complex surgery on the leg veins. Varicose veins are not a cosmetic flaw but a health risk to be taken seriously. Our doctors will be happy to create an individual vein profile for you and advise you on possible treatment.

Aims of varicose vein treatment at the Westfalenklinik

  • Closure of the diseased vein without a larger incision
  • The treatment is possible on an outpatient basis and without general anaesthesia; you can go home immediately after the procedure
  • You are mobile again from the very first day
  • The procedure is minimally invasive
  • Unlike with other treatment methods, you do not have to wear compression stockings for several weeks

Removing varicose veins: treatment methods at the Westfalenklinik

At the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, our doctors offer you two treatment methods for vein disorders and varicose veins: endovenous laser treatment (ELVeS Radial™ or Intros Lina) or the radiofrequency procedure (VNUS Closure Fast™, Celon RFITT). Whether with radiofrequency or with the laser: both procedures stand for minimally invasive treatment in which a small probe is inserted into the diseased vein through a tiny puncture site in order to close the vein in a controlled and targeted way.

Depending on the condition, diagnosis and how well the patient tolerates it, the laser procedure or radiofrequency therapy can be carried out under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or sometimes also with a gentle form of anaesthesia. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Major discomfort is usually not to be expected during or after the treatment. You can get up immediately afterwards and should even keep moving with exercises and active walking. A return to normal activities and everyday life is usually possible shortly after your stay.

The Westfalenklinik recommends: removing varicose veins without open surgery

For the treatment of varicose veins, our treating doctors recommend one of the two modern endovenous procedures, as they manage without a larger incision and can be carried out on an outpatient basis. First, the probe is inserted into the vein using ultrasound. Then the laser or the radio-wave device can be activated and the inserted fibre slowly withdrawn. The energy transported into the vein through the fibre produces high temperatures, which subsequently cause the vein to close and contract. The body breaks down these closed veins in the months after the treatment.

Your schedule at Westfalenklinik

This is how varicose vein treatment proceeds at the Westfalenklinik, from the examination to the breakdown of the vein:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation and vein diagnostics in Dortmund. We take your medical history, examine your legs in different body positions and check the blood flow with Doppler ultrasound. We then discuss whether and how your varicose veins will be treated. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    On the day of treatment

About 30 to 45 minutes, outpatient. Under ultrasound guidance, a probe is inserted into the vein and the vein is closed with laser or radiofrequency, depending on the findings under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or anaesthesia.

  3. Step 3

    Straight afterwards

Get up and walk. You can get up immediately after the procedure and should keep moving with exercises and active walking. Afterwards you go home.

  4. Step 4

    After 3 to 4 days

Back to everyday life. You are usually back out among people after three to four days.

  5. Step 5

    In the following months

The vein is broken down. Visible traces of the procedure usually fade after 7 to 14 days; the body breaks down the closed vein in the months that follow.

Other treatment options for inflamed veins and varicose veins

Inflamed veins and varicose veins are often treated for aesthetic reasons, but treatment is also advisable for medical reasons. Conventional treatments used so far do deliver decent results, but the path there is often arduous and in many cases associated with considerable limitations to patients’ quality of life.

Compression therapy: in the widely used compression therapy, compression stockings exert pressure on the veins from the outside, thereby reducing the cross-section of the veins. The venous blood flow speeds up and swelling of the legs goes down. However, since veins that have once widened do not narrow again, compression therapy has to be used permanently.

Vein stripping: vein stripping is a surgical method in which the diseased veins are pulled completely out of the leg. Although this treats the cause of the disease, this form of therapy is more stressful and can lead to considerable side effects. The recovery time is usually three weeks or more.

Sclerotherapy of varicose veins with foam: here a special foam is introduced into the vessels. It triggers an inflammation, the veins scar and the varicose vein is closed. This method also carries a number of risks, such as allergic reactions, local death of skin tissue, excessive sclerosing reactions, nerve damage, migraine-like symptoms, orthostatic collapse or thromboembolism.

Recognising phlebitis early and preventing varicose veins

The type and severity of particular vein disorders such as phlebitis can nowadays be determined by special screening examinations. Modern vein diagnostics not only provide information on the condition of your veins or the extent of any venous disease that may be present, they also form the basis for initiating the appropriate therapy.

First, your doctor takes your personal medical history (anamnesis). Besides previous thromboses and phlebitis, vein diseases in your family also provide information on a possible susceptibility to varicose veins and vein disorders. Your legs are then examined in different body positions, as varicose veins usually fill up when you stand and disappear again when you lie down. This first impression can usually be checked more precisely with the help of various procedures.

The most commonly used Doppler ultrasound technique makes it possible to measure the direction of movement and the speed of your venous blood. Sometimes an ultrasound image of the blood vessels is also created to obtain even more precise information on the condition and functioning of your veins. In individual cases, an X-ray examination (phlebography) can also provide information on the shape and appearance of your veins as well as the valve function and the direction of blood flow. If you suspect inflamed veins or varicose veins, you can contact our doctors at the Westfalenklinik. We examine your veins thoroughly and show you possible treatment options.

What does varicose vein treatment cost in Dortmund? Costs and coverage by German statutory health insurance

The costs depend on your findings and the procedure. After your consultation at the Westfalenklinik, you will receive an individual treatment quote. The Westfalenklinik’s treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; follow-up treatments and the costs for the anaesthetist are not added afterwards.

If you have private health insurance or are entitled to Beihilfe (German civil service allowance), your health insurance or your Beihilfe covers the costs of medically necessary treatment depending on your plan, in many cases in full. People with statutory cover can apply for cost cover from their German statutory health insurance, although a co-payment is usually required. But self-financing is also possible: financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What are the advantages of having my varicose veins removed at the Westfalenklinik?

Compared with other surgical measures, such as so-called vein stripping, this kind of treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia or twilight sedation. The vein is treated through a small puncture site; larger incisions are not necessary. The treatment is short, and you can usually resume your daily activities quickly. Private health insurance and Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) cover the costs of medically necessary treatment depending on the plan. As with any procedure, side effects such as bruising or pain are possible.

How quickly will I see the result if I have my varicose veins treated?

In varicose vein treatment at the Westfalenklinik with the endovenous laser or by radio waves, the diseased vein is closed during the procedure, and you can quickly return to your normal activities. Visible traces of the procedure usually subside after 7 to 14 days; the body breaks down the closed vein over the following months.

What risks are there if I have my varicose veins removed?

Endovenous laser or radio-wave treatment is a minimally invasive procedure. Nevertheless, as with any procedure, risks and side effects can occur. It is therefore advisable in every case to have your individual situation assessed by our doctors at the Westfalenklinik so that a precise assessment can be given. In a personal consultation, we explain the risks to you.

Will my health insurance cover the costs of varicose vein treatment?

If you have private health insurance or are entitled to Beihilfe (German civil service allowance), your health insurance or your Beihilfe covers the costs of medically necessary treatment depending on your plan, in many cases in full. People with statutory cover can apply for cost cover from their German statutory health insurance, although a co-payment is usually required. Self-financing is also possible; financing is possible through our financing partner.

Can I prevent varicose veins from developing myself?

Exercise in everyday life is essential. People who sit a lot at work or stand for long periods should pay particular attention to getting enough exercise. A short walk in the lunch break or after work is often enough to get the veins going again. It also helps to simply get up during work and march on the spot for a few minutes to activate vein activity. Sports that are particularly suitable for prevention are those that work the muscles of the lower limbs. Running, hiking, swimming or cycling are therefore particularly suitable for preventing varicose veins.

What does varicose vein treatment cost in Dortmund?

The costs depend on your findings and the procedure. After your consultation at the Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, you will receive an individual treatment quote at final prices including statutory VAT. If the treatment is medically necessary, private health insurance and Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) cover the costs depending on the plan; people with statutory cover can apply for cost cover from their German statutory health insurance.
