Spider vein removal in Dortmund: examination and treatment in one place

The consultation, vein examination and sclerotherapy take place at Westfalenklinik in Dortmund, Rosemeyerstr. 2–4. Before the treatment we examine how the blood flows in your veins and what condition the vein valves are in. The treatment itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes per session, usually manages without anaesthesia and is outpatient: you go home afterwards and can move around freely.

The clinic is located right on the B1/A40 in the immediate vicinity of the Signal Iduna Park. By car, leave the B1 at the Dortmund-Hombruch exit and park on the building’s parking deck directly in front of the entrance. By public transport, take the U45 from the main station to Stadtgarten and then the U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim; from Dortmund Airport it is about 12 km via the B1.

Spider veins are mostly harmless, but often a bothersome sight

Spider veins are small veins on the legs and as a rule a purely aesthetic problem. As with other forms of vein conditions, such as varicose veins, a disorder of the veins underlies them. As soon as the veins located at the surface of the skin widen or even burst, blood vessels become visible through the skin: spider veins develop. On their own these are not necessarily dangerous, but they often point to weak connective tissue in the legs and can therefore be a forerunner of larger vein problems.

Today, the type and severity of vein conditions can be determined with the help of special preventive examinations. Modern diagnostics provides information on the condition of the veins and the extent of any venous disease that may be present, and is at the same time the basis for initiating appropriate therapy.

At the start of the individual consultation, your treating doctor therefore takes your personal medical history. Besides earlier thromboses and vein inflammations, vein diseases in the family also give information on a possible susceptibility to varicose veins and vein conditions. The frequently used Doppler ultrasound technique makes it possible to measure the direction of movement and speed of your venous blood. Sometimes an ultrasound image of the blood vessels is also produced in order to gain even more precise information on the condition and function of your veins.

Which methods are suitable for treating spider veins

Spider veins can then be treated with two different methods. On the one hand with the help of so-called sclerotherapy (microsclerotherapy), a planned elimination of the blood vessels (veins) by injecting a sclerosing agent. This sclerosing agent causes chemical damage to the inner wall of the vessel. This results in a minimal but controlled formation of a thrombus. After some time, the previously visible spider vein is transformed into a tiny cord that is usually no longer perceptible. Sometimes an alternative to sclerotherapy can be a special light treatment with the help of, for example, an IPL laser (intense pulsed light). In this treatment the small veins are heated and damaged through the skin by means of laser energy. The body then breaks down the blood vessels damaged in this way on its own within a few weeks.

Before the treatment, our doctors examine the flow conditions and the condition of the vein valves. Because spider veins differ greatly from person to person, they decide only after a thorough preliminary examination which therapy method is the right one for you.

All methods used at Westfalenklinik for the treatment of spider veins have been clinically tested many times and are considered gentle treatments compared with conventional forms of therapy.

A treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes per session. Major discomfort is generally not to be expected; you can go home immediately after the treatment and move around freely afterwards. Exercise is also possible directly after the therapy.

Sclerotherapy of spider veins is a routine medical treatment

Sclerotherapy of spider veins is a widely used treatment method. Nevertheless, there are also risks and side effects here, such as allergic reactions to the sclerosing agent, the formation of new small spider veins, accidental injection into the surrounding tissue, through to disorders of skin sensation and thromboses. Talk to our doctors about the risks and have them explain everything to you comprehensively before a procedure.

What exactly lies behind spider veins

Spider veins appear above all directly beneath the surface of the skin in the form of very fine reddish to bluish branchings of the veins on the thighs but also on the lower legs. These delicate small veins become visible through leaky vein valves lying deeper or arise in vein diseases such as varicose veins.

In general, spider veins are based on a widening of the veins. In patients with weak connective tissue this effect can be intensified and accelerate the appearance of these branchings. Excess weight, a high-fat diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and hormonal fluctuations can also lead to high blood pressure and circulatory disorders and promote the development of spider veins. Although spider veins as a rule neither cause discomfort nor are regarded as a health hazard, they do disturb the appearance of the skin. In addition, spider veins can very often be the first visible offshoots of more serious vein diseases, which in any case require medical treatment.

To improve the appearance of the skin, the small reddish to bluish veins, which are particularly noticeable on fair skin, are treated with sclerotherapy. There are various methods for this, which can usually be carried out without anaesthesia.

How spider veins are treated at Westfalenklinik Dortmund

Today, spider veins can be obliterated using laser, radio waves, electric current or a flash lamp (IPL). However, sclerotherapy or microsclerotherapy is frequently used. In this type of treatment, an active substance is injected with a fine needle into the respective centres of the vessel branchings. This causes a controlled inflammation of the vessel walls. The blood remaining in the affected small veins clots and is broken down and absorbed by the body. The vessel walls subsequently break down and stick together. Pressure bandages are then fixed to the respective puncture sites.

Course of spider vein treatment at Westfalenklinik

This is how spider vein treatment proceeds at Westfalenklinik, from the examination to the result:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation and examination in Dortmund. We take your medical history, examine the flow conditions and the condition of the vein valves, and then decide whether sclerotherapy or a light treatment is suitable for you. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    On the day of treatment

About 20 to 30 minutes, outpatient. Anaesthesia is usually not necessary. After sclerotherapy, pressure bandages are applied to the puncture sites; you can go straight home and move around freely.

  3. Step 3

    2 to 3 weeks afterwards

No sun, no heat. During this time, avoid sunbathing, sunbeds and saunas.

  4. Step 4

    After a few weeks

The result. The body breaks down the treated small veins, after which they are usually no longer visible. Because each small vein is treated individually, several sessions are often necessary.

What does spider vein treatment cost in Dortmund? Costs and coverage by German health insurance

The costs of a treatment can vary depending on the extent of the spider veins (area, frequency, intensity). If no medical indication can be diagnosed, treating spider veins is a self-pay service. Costs for this start at about €200 per session. Because each individual small vein is treated separately, several sessions are often necessary, depending on the number of spider veins.

In the context of diseases of the main veins, sclerotherapy of spider veins by (micro)sclerotherapy is also often carried out within the medical indication to improve the medical result. The resulting costs are usually covered by private health insurance, depending on the plan. Patients with German statutory health insurance can agree on cost coverage with their insurer before the treatment. We will be happy to put together an individual treatment quote for our patients at Westfalenklinik Dortmund. The treatment prices are final prices including statutory VAT; financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Are spider veins actually dangerous?

Spider veins on their own are not necessarily dangerous, but primarily an aesthetic problem. However, they often point to weak connective tissue in the legs and can therefore be a forerunner of larger vein weaknesses, for example varicose veins, also called varicosis.

Is any form of anaesthesia used when I have my spider veins treated with sclerotherapy?

Anaesthesia or sedation is generally not required. Should it be considered necessary to divide connecting veins before the sclerotherapy of spider veins, this is carried out under local anaesthesia.

What risks are there if I have my spider veins treated with sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy of spider veins is a widely used treatment method. Nevertheless, there are also risks and side effects here, such as allergic reactions to the sclerosing agent, the formation of new small spider veins, accidental injection into the surrounding tissue, through to disorders of skin sensation and thromboses. Talk to our doctors about the risks and have them explain everything to you comprehensively before a procedure.

What do I need to bear in mind when having my spider veins removed?

After the treatment, you should avoid direct sunlight such as sunbathing and sunbeds, as well as hot surroundings, for example from visits to the sauna, for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
